beat up on sierra ltz

Coming back from hockey this am and a 08 sierra crewcab ltz blows by me and while doing so waves and smiles; sooo I couldn't help myself. At the next light I pulled up and smiled back and proceeded to beat him by 2 truck lengths in about 4 blocks to the next light. So he pulls up again for more pain. this time he's abusing his brakes trying to get a jump but to no avail. same result. He wasn't smiling now.
Oh I should also note. He was by himself + empty box and I had the truck full with 4 big hockey players and 180 lbs of gear in the box so it wasn't even a fair fight; the titan had one hand tied behind its back and still no contest.
Scan guage showed peak rpm of 5650 and high speed of 78mph

Oh and the best part 2 miles down the road a cop comes flying up behind us and scares the **** of me... but he kept going on his way to tim hortons for more donuts.

mucho amusement all before breakfast!

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

ya i raced one of the new chevys last week, it was a Z71 on stock tires and exhaust. I beat him about the same and I had crew cab and 35s on. New chevys are nice but still slow.

Nice kill, almost as good as the new Challanger that I beat last week, it was only a V6 model but a kill none the less.

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

Some of those Chevy guys think they got the fastest trucks around or something. Everytime I pull up to other 1/2 ton trucks, they'd be looking my truck up and down.

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

I only owned GMC trucks before I bought my Titan in 2005. They still have the same 4 speed clunker transmission. I live in Colorado and drive to go skiing all the time up to 12,000 feet. My Sierra with 3.73 gears would hunt for gears like crazy on hills while turning ridiculous RPM's. The Titan? It flies right up a 10% grade at 8,000 plus feet, while holding the same gear at 2500 RPM max. What a difference!
I read GM's "new" six speed is just a 4 speed with two overdrives! So it's really just a 4 speed with a couple of cruising gears. I never driven a vehicle with such a refined drivetrain like the Titan. You barely feel it shift when driving like grandma and then when you step on it it responds quickly. It always seems to be in the right gear.

Agreed about the drivetrain. Kind of off-topic, but the shift of the Titan is what hurts it in a race. It takes like 2 to 3 seconds just to shift gears. Smooth yes, quick, NO!! And it's a shame Nissan used a seperate computer for the tranny, then put it in the transmission!!
So there's no way to increase line pressure or remove any TM for the tranny!!

My titans shifted faster than any chevy I have been in, even my friends have said the same thing. I think the tundra is the only comparable truck when it comes to the drivetrain.

I think that some of these programmers can reduce the torque management can't they? Even so my GMC had a big time nanny. You would hammer the gas and there was no immediate surge for a couple seconds, then it finally started to accelerate.

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

They can reduce the TM in the engine, but not in the tranny. The TCU that controls the tranny is in the tranny; can't access it.
toomnymods had a shop 'beef up' his tranny and added a stall converter. Watch the video of his 12 second run and you'll see how fast his Titan shifts gears. It's like night and day compared to a stock tranny Titan.
As for the GM, they too have TM built into them, but a simple tune can remove it. I just had my Chebby done and I'm amazed what a little increase in line pressure will do to the shift. Beyond that, for about $100.00 (plus labor if you don't do it yourself) can add a shift kit, Corvette servo and seperator plate and really shore up the tranny (4l60e).
Turns out though, the new GMC trucks alsi have seperate ECU's (engine) and TCU's (tranny) and guess where the TCU is- in the tranny.
They're suffering the same as Titan owners now....

BTW- Sorry to hijack the thread- Nice kill!

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

My 08.5 Titan's tranny is light years ahead of the 06 F150 I had. The Titan is always in the right gear and shifts smooth and quick. The Titan shifts faster than the 2007 Tundra rental I had also.

Re: beat up on sierra ltz

Good kill! I had some dingleberry in a brand new 5.3L Silverado crewcab try to out accelerate me a few months ago and I had about the same outcome. He kept up a little until I reached 35-40mph then it was like the afterburners got lit and I pulled an instant 3-4 trucklengths on him when I let off at 75 mph.

Why is it that whenever you see one of these new Silverado's tooling around, the owner is driving it like an a-hole? It's like they think just because they have a brand new truck with a V8 engine and 20's on it, they have the fastest truck ever made? Maybe I'm just running into rentals being ragged out or something. I can't wait until I get my programmer though. This waiting until 35-40mph to achieve full throttle is killing me.
