LT1 and DONE!!!!

Left the house this AM for work at my usual pace (urgent but not crazy)..... I get about 3 miles from the house and I see the unmistakeable lights of a 94-96 Camaro coming at me at a good clip. Joe Dirt then proceeds to ride my bumper for a good while (curvy backwoods road) and I know he will attempt a pass on the straight away up ahead. Sure enough...We get to the straight and he dives over. I nail the pedal like it was Kate Beckinsale in a nighty and the beast roars to life. I stop his pull immediately and proceed to walk SLOWLY away. Now he hangs back and I am thinking "THAT better be a LT1 and not a 6 banger". Fast forward to a couple of 4 mile straights.....Here he comes and I figure to let him pass...gotta know if it was an LT1. He zooms around and EUREKA!!!! The unmistakeable sound of the Chevy V8, Z28 Emblems and the square exhaust tips. Now I know I know...........It has probably been beat on more than a 5 dollar whore but not too shabby for a BEAST of a truck. Hell.......I even had the A/C on when we ran 'em.

Friday morning was good

OH YEAH....That is why I let him go to see if he was packing a tired LT1 in that thing. Buddy of mine had a 1994 LT1 Z28 Auto.....My 2002 GT would pull away from him while running the on ramp to merge. Would LOVE to run it in the Titan, but he got rid of it.

An old wore out LT-1 would be fair game for a fairly modded titan. Those even when they were fresh and new weren't really anything to write home about compared to todays standards. And his lightning (even a bone stock lightning for that matter) would do a LOT more than slowly pull away from an LT-1!

interesting...

cause i know a guy that bought a 1995 camaro Z28 with over 100,000 miles on it...original engine and trans. he brought it to the track and ran low 14s...bone stock too. wanna say he was 14.2-14.5ish. i guess if it was hot and humid (like it has been lately down here) then it isnt out of the realm of possibility, but logically the Z28 should be a hair faster...fast enough to pull on a lightly modded titan

Re: LT1 and DONE!!!!

To run those times it had to have been a 6 speed with a good driver and the engine had to have been still fairly strong (which 100k miles on a properly maintained LT1 isn't much, they were tanks of engines!). Those were good times for a fresh 6 speed LT1. An auto LT1 was very lucky to hit mid 14's when they were brand new and if they had the more popular 2.73's they were high 14 second cars. If it was an abused auto they would be game for a very lightly modded titan.

Re: LT1 and DONE!!!!

I figured it had to be to run those times stock. Never ever heard of a stock auto, even with the rare(for an auto) 3.42's running low 14's. Tell you're buddy he's a hell of a good driver. hen help him put on the LT4 package and turn that thing into a 12 second car!

Re: LT1 and DONE!!!!

Nice kill. A couple things though.

You're right that's there's lots of tired LT1's out there now, especially with their poorly executed "optispark" ignition. However, 14.4 is more considered the "normal" stock time for a 93-97 (LT1) F-body. Some have even dipped into the 13's bone stock.

Here's what ExoticCarSite.com lists for magazine tested times for those years:
1993 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 5.8 14.4
1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 5.7 14.2
1994 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 Conv. 6.2 14.5
1995 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 5.7 14.2
1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 5.7 14.1
1996 Chevrolet Camaro Z28 SS 5.3 13.8

The SS is of course a specially prepped packed by SLP, just like the Firehawk.

My own automatic 3.23 geared LT1 Firebird did 14.29 at 97mph on Toyo street tires at Bremerton raceway on the first time I ever took it to the track. With a CAI, cat-back, and Nitto DR's, she got to 13.55 at 102. I wasn't considered to be particularly fast among the f-body crowd with those numbers.
