What are the round, open holes in the sides of my truck bed?

OK, I have another question about my 2015 Titan SV 2-wheel drive king cab:

What are the round, open holes in the sides of my truck bed?

They are factory holes with nothing in them---you can see whatever is behind the holes, and mostly all you see is just the back side of the fender.

I cannot figure out any purpose for the holes, and they look ugly to me.

I measured the holes. There are 2 sizes:

Some are 16.80 mm in diameter, and some are 21.32 mm in diameter.

Seems like odd diameters to me.

They do not seem to provide access to anything behind the holes.

They don't look like vent or drainage holes; they are high up on the side of the bed.

I find it strange that they aren't all the same size.

I bought my truck slightly used; but I seriously doubt that the first owner removed factory plugs from these holes.

Second question, does anybody know of a plug (black plastic or metal that I could paint black) that I can buy and snap in the holes to cover the holes?

Is there any reason I shouldn't plug them?

(I know the pat answer is, "Don't do it. The holes wouldn't be there if Nissan didn't think they were necessary.")

Thanks.

Pictures would be helpful.

I will try to get some photos of mine soon.

I also removed the 2 aluminum tie-down rails in the bottom of the bed and there are similar size open holes under the aluminum rails (not the hold-down bolt holes).

Thanks.

OK, I took photos. The yellow arrows point to the larger holes that were under the tie-down rails.

The red arrows point to the smaller holes that were already exposed with the rails in place.

I think that's for tie down tracks. Not for sure. I have the tracks in mine but not sure.

Re: What are the round, open holes in the sides of my truck bed?

I searched the Titan Factory Service Manuals and found no mention of the holes, but the holes (the large and small ones) are shown in one or two drawings that show the truck bed.

I also searched the Owner's Manual to see if the holes are mentioned, and they are not.

The Owner's Manual does say to wash out from under the fenders periodically---but they don't say how: "Spray water under the body and in the wheel wells to loosen the dirt and wash away road salt."

But the larger holes are underneath the aluminum tie-down rails; so you cannot get to them unless you remove the rails.

As I mentioned, the bottom of the bed has several of the same size large holes underneath the tie-down rails, but you have to remove the rails to see them. Looking through those holes you can just see the ground, the axle, and the top of the gas tank.

I am thinking that the holes are used by Nissan during manufacture or assembly of the truck.

Yeah, probably for factory positioning, tooling. The ones closest to the front make great drain holes for tonneau covers that require a drain tubing exit through the bed.

Re: What are the round, open holes in the sides of my truck bed?

May 21 2019, I just (April 2019) bought a new Titan King Cab 4x4 - had a new $2000 canopy installed the same day, to have a water-tight (I thought) bed. Driving through heavy rain, spray from underneath comes up through pinhole leaks in two places on the bed floor - where seams of the bed floor come together (my old pickups had a one-piece bed, no leaks there!). Also found that spray up from the rear wheels was coming into the bed through the holes referenced in earlier posts. I have contacted three Nissan dealerships; only one would admit to having known of it, but that one (in farm country of southeast Washington) said they have many complaints about both water and dust into the bed. None of the three offered any fix, said that "that is the way Nissan builds them" and sort of "not our problem" attitude. Any suggestions, either abut pre-made plugs for the round holes, or the pinhole leaks? I have already searched for having the bed under-coated; apparently that is not done by anyone here in southern Idaho -not rust country. Guess I'lll be making do with RTV or bed sealer......
Thanks

I bet the holes are there to attached the Titan Boxes if you were to get them. The metal tie down rails are above the Titan Boxes anyway.

You can see by the placement of the holes and the indents you would be correct, they're for the Titan boxes.

One would think they could have installed some rubber plugs?

I prefer not using remote start or drive-thrus, both hurt your MPG's a lot & you shouldn't let your vehicle idle more that a minute or so especially unattended.

$$$$$$

If they can save cents over thousands of vehicles, and only a few complain they'll do it.
