Fuel econ query

I have a 2017 pro4x with the gas motor. I recently towed a 81 jeep cj7 on a uhaul car trailer from nm to sc. About 1500mi. Interstate the whole way. I averaged about 8.5mpg. What is normal for trucks?
I had a2011 f150 EcoBoost and it got about 12 mpg when towing.
Thoughts?

Don't know if what you are describing is comparable; same distances, same trailer, same vehicle being towed, any headwinds while towing, same speed while towing?

What was the total weight of the tow?

I'd say that seems in the ballpark. Towing capacity of the Titan is 9,730. Towing capacity of the Ford F150 is 11,300. As you get up to a certain percentage of the towing capacity, it's going to have an effect.

Re: Fuel econ query

My Titan averaged about 7-8 when towing. As low as 5, as high as 11. Just depended on all of the other variables. Towing a 12 foot Uhaul box trailer, loaded up to probably 5k lbs total weight, I averaged a little more than 10 for the 1,000 miles. That was going over Raton Pass included. Towing nothing, the Titan averaged only about 12. 16 on the highway if I babied it.

Re: Fuel econ query

My '08 Titan is used on the heavy range of towing. It averages 6.5 MPG towing a 24' enclosed racecar trailer with 8-9K of racecar, tools, spare parts and even race fuel at times. Like Carbeaux, I live in Colorado and do a lot of high-altitude towing. In general, I've been happy with how the VK56DE has performed, and would hope the new VK56VE would be just a bit better with mileage.

Re: Fuel econ query

The Titans just suck gas period compared to other trucks on the market. Not really sure why that is? For how much fuel is being used you would think we are driving 600 hp 5.6's not 318hp (2015 1st Gen for me).

I mean we all know trucks aren't the greatest on gas anyway, its just odd to me. The guy down the street from me drives a HellCat Charger and gets better mileage that our Titan gets...WTF???

Not surprising at all. Compare an F150 with the 5.0 V8 towing the same load. My money is it will be the same or at most 10% better than your Titan.

You can't compare a V8 vs a V6TT and expect the V8 to get better gas mileage under heavy towing load. Turbocharged engines operate under load much better than naturally aspirated engines. This is why the big rigs use turbo diesel engines instead of massive gas engines.

Re: Fuel econ query

I get about the same mileage out of my 2018 Titan that I got out of my 2014 5.0 f-150. about 1 mpg better than my old 98 chevy RCSB with a 350 v8, or 1 mpg worse than my 2011 2wd silverado 5.3 V8, Empty or towing my camper, you don't buy a V8 for mileage, thats just silly.

2018 Titan Pro-4x, 6" Rough Country lift kit, LT285/75R18 Yokohama Geolander A/T G015, AMP Research PowerStep.

my 2015 Camaro SS LS3/6 spd manual 426hp-420tq gets 20ish average , my 2015 titan 2wd gets about 14 average

I think its the weight to HP offset, more HP works less to get weight moving, but im not planning an LS3 swap any time soon for this truck.

LS3 barely makes more than VK56VD stock. Stock 350HP C5 Vettes can average 28 mpg on the hwy. It's a combination of weight, aero and gearing. Mostly the weight that kills the MPG.
