My friend just bought the new Dogde Magnum with the 5.7 HEMI and the window sticker displays 17MPG city, 25MPG highway. Does anyone know what is going on with the HEMI to produce those kind of numbers?

what the heck you doing up so early?

first thing I would check is the rear gear in that hemi. with the torque they have, they could easily pull a 2.9 something ring and pinion and that would help a lot with gas. juma

He mentioned something about the engine running on 4 cylinders when the power is not needed, but I thought he was talking BS.

JUMA: Unfortunately I work 4:00am to 1:00pm as it was the only way I could take a job in DC and beat the traffic in and out.

The Dodge Magnum shuts down up to 4 cylinders when not needed.Aparently the trucks don't do that.

Yep the Cadillac 8/6/4 as it was called was a bomb. A friend of mine had one and you
use to step on the gas at a light and it wouldn't move and than it would take off. All
kinds of problems. Cadillac bought it back from him.

Newer technology in computers and mechanical/electrical switches and activators had
made doing this now much easier. All the early reviews on the Dodge systems are good
and they say you can hardly feel it working. Time will tell but with all the things they
are doing with variable timing and such it is probably realistic for this to work.

I haven't seen any Dodge truck window sticker but....this is straight from the Dodge website:

The 5.7-liter HEMI® Magnum® V8 is arguably the most significant V8 production power plant on Earth. And for the sake of argument, consider the efficiency advantages of its design - like 100 more horsepower and 10% more fuel efficiency than its predecessor*. Also consider how this exclusive power plant design is still used in Top Fuel dragsters. All that and it's logged over 5-million customer equivalent miles.

*14 city/18 highway for Ram 1500 4x2.

And curiously, the official EPA website does not list a 5.7 liter engine in the Ram 1500 - just the 4.7. The 5.7 is listed for the Ram 2500 and has no official mileage numbers.

advertised and realized mileage is quite different. My Tacoma says 17/19mpg, but it's realistically 16mpg tops... Don't pay too much attention to window stickers, imo.

17 mpg vs 14 mpg(titan) 3800 lbs vs 5000 lbs

The city mpg is nothing to brag about. If our trucks were 3800 lbs they would get 18+ city probably. The 25 hy is not bad,but we get an honest 19,and I bet we have 50% more drag.
I'm not impressed with the Hemi's inherent efficiency. The Dodge guys get about 1-2 mpg less city than we do in a truck that is about the same weight. The cyl shutdown is a great idea, but it would work even better with an inherently more efficient motor.Charlie PS I like the Hemi Rams, and the new Magnum-almost got the Hemi Ram.I still prefer the Ram's looks to the Titan-good truck, and good looking, but I think we have the more efficient motor-MPG-and motor weight for power..

Wolf2050: I am not talking about the HEMI in the Ram, it is the HEMI in the new 2005 Magnum. (it looks like a low profile stationwagon) The Ram still uses the HEMI that you displayed info about, but the Magnum must be using a different version of the HEMI.

chief,

Odd... in my 2003 QC 4x4 Hemi I got about 12 - 12.5mpg, and I hotdogged it everywhere. On top of that I had 4.56 gears & 315/70/17's which should have hurt my mileage a bit. Otherwise just a CAI.

Speed wise I ran a 15.887 my first time at the track... not bad for a QC 4x4 truck on 34.5" tires. The only other 4x4 there was a new Chevy that ran a 19.x after spinning super bad.

I think an equivalent CC 4x4 stock Titan on 285's runs about 15.55. I think for a stock Hemi QC 4x4's, the best times I've seen is about 15.6. Usual times I've personally seen for stock 4x2 Reg Cab Hemi's is in the high 14's. 4x2 QC Hemi's in low to mid 15's, which is where I expect my Reg Cab 4x4 to run w/ 4.10 gears & CAI.

In my 2004 Reg Cab 4x4 Hemi I'm getting mid to low 13 mpg flooring it 50% of the time & with A/C on 50% of the time.
