Ok, so over the past year the '04 crecab 4WD OffRoad quit in the middle of driving on about 3 occasions. I didn't bother to go to the dealer as they can't fix something that aint broke when they see it. Anyway . . .

Had the beast out Saturday Am and it started, ran and drove 'normal'. The Truck Chick goes to start it this (Monday) morning and nothing. I wasn't there at the time, but when I tried it I got the faintest clicking, but no turn over.

I put the battery charger on it, and the negative jumper will spark and crackle like hell if you move it around a bit. With the charger on "Start" all the idiot lights will flash and the clicking is more pronounced, but no turn over. I checked the connections I can get to (both battery terminals, the ground at the engine, the ground at the body) but nothing will make the beast turn over.

Does the excessive sparking on attachment of the cables indicate a short somewhere? (I tried hooking the neg cable to the engine too, same results)

Though I held an ASE 25 years ago in 4 categories, I cannot even FIND the starter, let alone look for a loose connection there!!

Reading some other posts I see talk of batteries dying suddenly. But the charger won't make the beast turn over, so I doubt the battery is the problem.

Ideas???

The starter is under the intake manifold. It sounds like you do have a battery that has reached its "Use By" date.

Well, I tried it on 'cranking amps' on the starter/charger, and after about 5 seconds of lights and gauges flashing and clicking noise (not quite like the typical solenoid clicking sound) smoke began to come out of the air vent to the right of the steering wheel. Though I was pissed enough at this point to hold the key on and burn the beast to the ground, it was too close to the house to make this a viable alternative.

I spoke F2F with the local service manager, who postulated a short within the battery itself. This would explain the fact that it still wouldn't crank with the charger on.

So, I'm off to buy a battery. If that works, we'll just have to see if the dash still smokes.

BTW . . . I spoke with a used car dealer that is a friend of mine, and he said an '04 went for $12k at the auction this week with 95k on it. Of course that one didn't have a boss plow, nor a color-matched cap. Hmmm . . . .
But I also bet it didn't have smoke rollin outta' da dash. Yikes!!

I had the smoking, clicking, no starting issue on my '91 Ranger. It was the starter that was bad. I figured that out after I put in a new battery of course. :(

Can you say . . . "Oh, s|-|i+"???:hat:

$102 at Advance for a batterey, and the TruckChick's beast started right up.

The bad news - you knew there was bad news - is that the 4WD light in on solid, and switching the 4WD selector will not make the beast go into 4WD. Tomorrow I will have to take inventory of what no longer works as I drive the beast around trying to determine if it is going to burn up.

Lesson learned . . . test the battery when a batterey dies 'suddenly'. Not volts, but RESISTANCE, especially when jumper cables and/or a battery charger make serious sparks.

I haven't been in the room since before "Thanx" were possible, but, Thanx to whoever tried to point me in the direction of battery.

Truck not starting is a good indication of a dead battery. Truck dieing while driving is not the battery. If it keeps do it then it could be the IPDM. More specificly the ECU relay found at the IPDM. I don't think you can buy just the IPDM relay though. Someone posted about swapping the fog light relay for the ECU relay.

Good Luck!!
