I read that all 2005 Titans will have dampened tailgate assist which should make opening the gate an easier, one handed operation.

Does anyone know how this works and if it can be retrofitted to a 2004?

I too am very interested in this and hope that it is something that can be fitted to our 04 models. That's the heaviest tailgate I've ever had the displeasure of using. That combined with my tired worn out butt makes it a SOB to open and close one handed.

Maybe its cause I'm a big guy but I just dont see the fuss in the tailgate. Is it really so heavy you guys cant let it down. Not trying to call you girly men or nothing but come on its a tail gate. Anyways maybe you guys could look into getting it switched to open to the side like a regular door if its that bad. I have seen this done and to tell you the truth they look really good. I'll see if I can find a picture I know I saw one the other day. Only problem is you lose the tail gate as a seat or extra length to haul boards and stuff.

First off I never said I couldn't let it down. I only said it was a pain doing it one handed. Especially if your on the shorter side like me. I'm 5'9" so I loose the leverage that some of you taller guys have. How old are you? I'm 48 and those are 48 rough years. Yeah, 20 even 10 years ago I would not have given the tailgate a second thought, But we don't stay young and strong forever. Trust me on that. And no way would I convert the tailgate to swing open.

My wife is 5'0" and cannot open or close the tailgate herself. She simply cannot support the weight. This was one of the things I mentioned to Nissan when I met with their people earlier this year. Looks like they actually listened.

It was just a thought. I guess being 6'6" and 315 lbs does have an advantage after all. Ill remember that next time I knock my head on the top of the doorway. HEHE. Hope they get you guys something that will help ya out. If not you know you could always design something yourself then make a ton of money off of it.

I didn't have a great deal of trouble one handing the tailgate, until I put the topper on. The seals on both sides where the topper meets the tailgate create enough drag, that I need both hands to open it. Otherwise, I would probably pull the handle off. The torsion bar wouldn't help this at all, but it is not a bad idea. I had a friend who opened my Chevy tailgate with one hand, and then just let it drop. Really hard on the cable attachment points. I told him "If you are too weak to let it down gently, then leave it the hellll alone." He got the message.

Does anyone know if the assist in the Ford tailgate is built into the tailgate alone or if the bed has something that interacts with torsion bars in the tailgate? I sure would like to buy a new assisted tailgate for my Titan if that's all you have to do.

It's internal to the tailgate alone, there is nothing assisting it from the bed.

Why is it so heavy?Plastic, aluminum etc

Why in the world did Nissan make it so heavy.I have had 2 full sized, and 4 Tacoma sized pickups before the Titan.I don't think eith of the full sized tailgates weighed 60% of this baby. What do they have in there-lead?Are they trying to convince us it is well built by making it so heavy.Could some sort of polymer,or aluminum be used to lighten it.Heck,it is only a tailgate, not a dam.You could hang some 3/4" plywood back there and lose a lot of weight(Look like S_ _ _ of course).Charlie

The makers of Pop & Lock (MiTech) make a Tailgate Assist and I'm
still waiting for an answer from them if they plan on making one to
fit the Titan. I saw one on a Ford and it sure worked smooth. I'll
post something whenever I get a reply.
