Sammy - I'm sold! I just ordered the Flowmaster 70 dual in/dual out ($109), x pipe ($35), and some chrome tips ($39). With shipping it was $201.60. I will get it all installed locally. I printed out your pictures so they can set mine up like yours. I will come back to this thread in a few weeks when it's installed. Thanks for the great idea and all the details. This will be my first modification!

Another x-pipe mod

A small addition to the body of Titan Exhaust system knowledge:
My Titan with the Flowmaster 70 X-pipe exhaust had a loud in-cab resonance at 60-65mph speed-up/slow-down situation where most of my commute occurs, otherwise I loved it. The Flowmaster 70 was replaced with the equivalent Flo-Pro crossflow muffler still using the X-pipe. Exhaust tone was just a bit deeper/richer/smoother except in the resonant 'zone', where resonance was worse (louder). This weekend, the muffler shop removed the X-pipe, running the 2 1/4" pipes from flanges directly into the dual muffler input. Change was very subtle; decreased the resonance just a little but also decreased the lovely "burbling" sound when cruising in the 30-50 mph range. Net, not an improvement and still not what I'm looking for. :crying:
Muffler shop is helping a great deal with the experiment, and if/when we find a combination that satisfies my really picky ears, I'll let you know. (As a senior citizen, I'm more interested in sound quality than quantity! :hat: )

what differences could be experienced using 2 flowmaster mufflers (single in/out), with one on each side, as opposed to a dual in/out with x pipe?

That would probably be the ideal setup, but you'd still want to have a crossover (x or h). The only reason I didn't do it was the extra money, perhaps later on I'll consider it.

With a stock small block, even such as the 5.6 in the Titan, you're not pushing enough cfm's through the exhaust system for the real benifits of a "true dual" system to come into play. You can only get so much in, and so much out, especially w/ a completely stock intake system. A dual in-dual out muffler vs. single in-dual out has no advantages over either setup, it's just a fitment thing. Single in/dual out is an easier application to run w/ when you run w/ a Flowmaster system, since they offer every muffler in that option.
Also, with a dual in/out system, you basically eliminate the need for an x pipe. Although a slight difference might be noticed, performance wise on a dual in single muffler system you won't see anything different. And with a chambered design such as Spin Tech or Flowmaster, the spent exhaust gasses basically cancel each other out within the muffler case.

If you plan on forced induction sometime within the next year or two, I'd say go for true duals. If not, a single in or dual in system will give you the same results :)

Potroast - See this post http://www.titantalk.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11758&highlight=vortec for a dual muffler setup. This was done on Keven's truck by Kinney' Muffler in Bedford, TX (DFW area), also where my exhaust work has been done. They professionally videotape (with audio) most of their installations, and I listened to the dual-vortec tape before having my SammySystem installed. The Titan with Vortecs sounded really smooth, but just a bit quiet for my taste.
The Flowmaster has a lot more 'character'. Check the link that Likearock posted for much more info (http://www.exhaustsoundclips.com/).
Sammy's soundbites are posted there as well, and seem to download faster than here. Also, I have a DVD from Kinney's that has with 4 different Titan installations taped. At $20.00, it's still a good way to really compare. (My Flowmaster 70 x-pipe, Flowmaster 50, Magnaflow crossflow, and FloPro crossflow). Their url is www.Kinneysmufflershop.com.

And Sammy is right on, the dual-muffler setup ain't cheap!
Good Luck.

Link didn't work :coolsmile

Just edit it and take out the third n lol :jester:

BTW: That is an awesome shop! It reminds me of the one I go to, just a LOT bigger

Rock,
Oooops, sorry about the typo. Thanks for the correction. Kinneys is a real DFW treasure, top quality and they seem to genuinely care about the customer. They're by appointment only except for Saturday when drive-ups overflow the parking lot, usually booked a week in advance. Best selection of mufflers, pipes, and tips that I've ever seen. Thanks for the exhaustlinks site url, lots of neat stuff there too.

Another mod, gettin' closer to 'Perfect'! The addition of two 'bullet' mufflers/resonators in place of the original x-pipe reduces overall sound level in the cab by maybe 20-30%, but still retains the same sound quality. Although the bullets are close together, there is no physical connection between them. Resonance mentioned above is also reduced, close to an acceptable level although I would like to damp it a little more.

Update:

It's installed. I've been busy so it took 4 weeks to me to get around to it. This is my first exhaust other than factory on any vehicle I have ever owned. It's definately louder, but sounds very cool. I think I got bent over by the installer. He charged me about $350 to install the system. This included all the pipes and hangers except for the X pipe, tips and the Flowmaster 70 which I bought on my own. The whole job cost me $550. Overall I am happy, but it's money I probably should have used on a bed cover.

Sweet, ain't it!! Don't feel too bad about the price, my exhaust ran about $670 installed, but had high-dollar SS tips and it's by a premium muffler shop. They've made three mods for me since then, no charge. Would be interested to know if yours has a resonant condition at about 1500-1700 rpm?
Thanks!

Just called one of the local performance shops here and they quoted me...

$112.00 for the muffler
$70.00 for the X-Pipe
$175.00 for the pipe and labor
Not sure about the tips yet. They said they never heard of a rolled slant tip?

I was shocked to get a quote like that after reading what I've read here. I am getting it done next week. YAAAAHOOOOO!!!!

You can order the muffler yourself for less than that, as well as the X-pipe. Probably save yourself $50 if you are willing to mail-order. I'm sure they've heard of rolled tips, probably just by a different name. Let us know what you do.

I don't think anyone in this thread got mandrel bends, and I haven't ever seen a shop that has the equipment to do it. If you do find a place that can mandrel bend pipes, expect to pay a whole lot of money.

You're absolutely correct, Sammy! My pipes were not 'mandrel bent', muffler shop is contemplating buying that type of forming machine, but it's really expensive, $130K or so if I remember correctly.

Lots of suppliers have the rolled tips, but the stainless steel rolled tip version is a little harder to find. Wouldn't recommend anything but SS.

OK, so here is my questions. Is the X pipe better then the H? What im trying to figure out is, does it get more flow with a X that gives you more HP AND will the X give you a louder sound then the H? Thanks

Also, i was thinking of going with 2 40 original series mufflers, just wondering what will be the BEST way to do them, in a H or X pattern for louder sound and better flow. Will be putting 4 inch tips out the side of the truck at 45 degree angle, not out the corner .
