Autozone, and Advance Auto both have recycle totes that they will let you dump into free around here.

Most auto parts stores have recycling facilities, and will take it off of your hands. Checker, Schucks Kragen, Pep Boys, Autozone, etc. Call around you area...

There was a garage where I used to live that would gladly take used oil and burn it to heat his shop in the winter. Don't know how legal that is but I was glad to drop it off there for free!

It is perfectly legal if it is the right kind of furnace. A friend of mine owns his own garage and this is exactly how he heats it all winter, the furnace is designed to run on this type of oil. During the summer he has lots of specials on oil changes because he keeps all the old oil. Got to love then Porsche 911s with all 12 quarts...

I'm changing my oil today. where can i take my old oil to be disposed of properly?
Good for you for recycling! 42 million gallons of used motor oil are improperly dumped in storm drains, sewers, and other places each year! This compares to "just" 10 million gallons spilled by the Exxon Valdez tanker disaster. I cringe when I see folks dumping motor oil out into fields and along fence lines to get rid of it.

I use a plastic 5 gallon kerosene (blue color) container to temporarily store the oil from my oil changes. I use the blue container and mark it "used oil" so that I won't confuse it with a red colored gas can. The 5 gallon container holds several oil changes so that I can turn it in to the recycling place at my convenience. This type container makes it easy to dump the oil at the recycling center also. I tie the handle of the can to a Utilitrac cleat with a short piece of rope so that it won't tip over. This has worked very well for me.

I do exactly the same thing, Bayou. Only I use a red state container vs.
the blue state one. :jester:

I wish I hadn't used my best 5 gallon plastic one for oil. The ones I have
looked at recently don't have the extra vent cap, and I hate them.

I've also got one of those big metal trays that looks like a giant cookie
sheet. It helps keep splatters off my garage floor.

Here's what you do... find a lonely road somewhere with a gentle downhill slope. Pull your drain plug & filter and let 'er coast.

On second thought, maybe you should take it to a major auto parts store like autozone or pep boys instead.

Who would use the yellow, diesel can? Yellow bellies that can't take a stand? :jester:

Why recycle...I just go down to the nearby creek, straddle it with the Titan and pull the plug...no muss, no fuss. Seriously I am just joking...take your oil to any of the quick change oil places and they will usually let you dump it there.

Is there a certain type of container I'm supposed to put this in? I was planning on draining the oil into a large, plastic oil pan with a cap and pouring that into my used 4 qt oil jug and maybe an old water jug.

how does it work? do i go by and pour the oil into their tank, or drop off containers full of the old oil?

i got 5 gts of new 10w-40 valvoline. is this enough?

Aggie,
I have taken used oil to both Autozone and Advanced. They will have a
huge storage container in the back with a covered opening on top that
you will have to dump the oil in yourself. They will just point it out to
you and tell you to sign the log.

I like to use a 5 gallon plastic gas container so that I don't have to go
dump it after every oil change. Pick a container that you can use without
making a big mess. My oil drain pan has a drain that is smaller than the
opening in the gas can, so I can transfer it without getting it all over the
floor.

I don't think 5 quarts is enough to have on hand. I believe mine held more
than that. Buy 2 filters and a 12 pack case of oil and you won't have to
make as many trips to the parts store.

I've been useing Era laundry soap bottles for years to hold my used motor oil until I can take it to a Parts Store. They are large have nice big openings and I don't have to worry about having a bad day and putting the wrong fuel in the wrong equipment.
Not to mention they are free after the wife has emptied them.
Doing it this way you don't have to wait for them to empty it.Just drop the bottle off and be on your way.
