Don't hot rods use gears like 411's? Get from point A to point B faster but rev the heck out of the motor. Correct me if I'm wrong please.

Depends on the engine's HP and Torque characteristics. Sometimes better times will come with a lower ratio. However for towing and off-roading, higher gear ratios are always welcome and for low torque vehicles that need that extra twist off the line.

Have a good one.

So far, my first tank was my best at 15 MPG, and it's been a steady reduction from there to yesterday's record low of 13.1 MPG. I blame this reduction on a number of things:

1. This entire tank was nothing but my commute to work, which isn't that far, so it had more cold starts than normal.

2. The air temperature has been averaging in the 30s lately, so there goes more gas (but I do get more power).

3. Due to the fact that I am becoming more comfortable with the truck, plus #2, I've been pushing harder on the pedal on the right.

I am only at 3000 miles now, so I expect by next summer, I hopefully should see 15 again, but I'll keep my expectations low. Gas is currently running around $1.74/gal here, and it only cost $40 to fill up which had lasted over 2 weeks, so I'm not complaining, but if I put on more miles, I see how this could be a pain.

Type driving, time spent idleing, driving habits and tire pressure all have to do with fuel mileage. I get 14-15 consistenly with some in-town and some interstate. Faster you drive the more fuel you burn.

Help me out here folks? I just bought a 04 Ttian 4x4 LE with 5300 miles, loaded, crew cab which is a very sweet truck but this thing drinks fuel like a Irishman on a holiday. Is this normal? I put duel exhaust on it thinking it would help the situation and it still sucks it down. The best I've gotton so far is 11.4 miles to the gallon.
What should I expect? I took it to the dealer and they checked it over and told me that everything is as it should be.. Heck the low is supposed to be 13 with a 4x4 and 18 as a high. Being in Northern CA where gas is 2 bucks a gallon this is not acceptable. Any suggestions on how to improve it or what to do? I drive alot and my gas bill will triple with this truck.. :grimrippe

Thanks,
Scott, your profile states your truck is an SE model with a Leer topper. Did you replace the truck with the LE, and if so, do you have the topper installed on it?? A topper, in most cases, will cause enough drag to cause worse mileage due to aerodynamics/weight. Just a thought.

Also, some have seen a 1-2 mpg increase by going full synth on enginge and rear diff. I just replaced my rear diff oil w/ Mobile 1 75-140W, and plan on going with Amsoil for the engine on my second oil change. Maybe try that, along with increasing tire press, as has been suggested.

I'm at 5400', so my mileage kinda sucks mainly due to efficeincy losses from less dense air. My worse mileage was 10mpg city.....best was 13mpg, mostly highway. So I too have "mileage envy". I'd be happy at this point hitting 14mpg consistently. But I love the truck, and it is a truck, so I'll be happy either way! But I do agree that somethings not right with your situation. Unless you're pulling a fifth-wheel, uphill at that, you shouldn't be seeing 7.5mpg. Good luck, man!

Steve

I agree, the only way you should be getting 7.5 is pulling a 5-7k lbs trailer.

With just over 1500 miles on my I already broke 18mpg! I got 18.3 with 95% freeway driving (Seattle to Portland OR)

I just looked at my 05 Titan brochure. It does show 2 diffferent gear ratios for the rear. Non big tow vs. big tow, doesn't mention a variable in gas mileage. My question is which is better for mileage. truck with big tow or regular LE and put a nissan hitch on after?

Clint

I have 1100 miles on my Titan and have been getting between 14.0 and 15.9 mpg. As I have been told, this milage will improve as the motor gets broke in. Even if it doesn't, this is the same gas milage I was get out of a F-150 with a 4.6 and I now have a WHOLE lot more power!!!

I thought the tow package with the lower final drive ratio was to help keep the rpm down in towing. I'd think it would get better overall mileage.

Yep! My Chevelle is a hot rod, 502,5 speed with 411's and the car is made to tear it up. It's going to be a sweet car when it gets done!

I'm willing to try whatever to get this to the teens, any suggestions will help..

Thanks..

NOw that is impressive! The only way I'd break the mid teens is to trailer it :teeth: But I am going to try the K&N and see what suggestions Summit Racing might have to say..

All, thats for the recommendations, keep em coming because between you all you might have the magic combination of things that will get the numbers I'm looking for.

Has anyone tried to put a different chip in the computer to see if this would do anything?

Thanks,

Scott

One other thing guys, the truck is very loud in the cab, has any of you tried to deaden the sound or do anything that might quiet down the interior?

Mileage first, quiet the cab second...
There are many different materials that can be used...check out the Nissan Titan Visual, Audio & Interior Modifications board.

I love the loud exhaust. If I get tired of it on the freeway, I just turn the radio way up.

As for addressing your problem again, considering the terrible gas mileage, I might just do an oil analysis to see if there's excessive fuel contamination in the oil. This is who I use for analysis: http://www.bobistheoilguy.com/terry.html this would give you some idea to see if the engine is running excessively rich.

Is it just me, or do other people with the 05' model think Nissan either toned down the exhaust or else they put more sound deadening material in the cab? I have driven a lot of 04's and they seem to be noticeably louder then my 05. I can hear the exhaust pretty good when I am accelerating quickly, but as soon as I am cruising on the city roads or the highways, it is just a slight pure in the background that I can barely hear.

Scott, are you sure you are calculating properly?? I'm not questioning your math skills, but something is amiss? Take the numer of miles you have on your trip odometer and divide it by the number of gallons it takes to fill it back up. You would be surprised of the number of folks that calculate this wrong....really.

I checked my mpg a few minutes ago while filling up on gas and after calculating I got 10.8 mpg with my last tank. I have a crew cab SE 2wd with 2100 miles on it. Is this pretty normal? What are you guys getting that have the same setup as me as far as truck specs? I drive about 85% city and usually go between 2000 to 2500 rpm's at takeoff. How many miles does it usually take before break in starts to increase mpg?

I try to keep accel rpms a bit lower than you. I get around 15. 1700 miles.

The '05 is definately 'quieter' than the '04 was....they either changed the resonators/exhaust somehow or put sound deading stuff in/under the cab for sure....
