Hello!! First off, this is a very informative board. One of the best I have seen. I just got a 2004 Titan SE 4x4 w/ BT, Popular package. I have had it for about a week. I am extremely unhappy with the gas mileage thus far. From the reading other posts on this site, I see other people are having similar problems. The dealer filled it up for me (one good thing they could do). On my first tank, I only got about 11 miles to the gallon. I was babying it the entire time following the 1200 mile break in. Very rarely went over 2500 RPM. On my second tank, same driving style, not much better. about 11.5 mpg. This is about 50/50 hw and street driving. Now, i didn't buy this truck for the gas mileage, but 11mpg is pathetic. Has anyone notice improved gas mileage as the truck breaks in. i will be happy with 13 or 14. I know that 2mpg is alot to gripe about, but when i drop money on a new truck, i expect decent performance. Any insight would be appreciated. Thanks

There are literally hundreds of threads and just as many opinions on this subject. The answer seems to be there is no definitive answer.Your gas mileage should improve but to what extent depends on lots of things. The best I can tell ya is search for gas mileage.(best, worst, lousy, etc and read away)13 to 15 with the big tow should be attainable with time.
I get 17 on average but I have the taller gears.
Welcome and luck to ya. :)

Don't take this wrong. Others have posted that they have done this. Make sure it's in drive and not in 4th. Take a look on your instrument cluster next time you drive your truck to make sure.

I recently took a trip to tulsa,ok from springfield,mo to the airport and that stretch is straight as a string with no hills, cruise set on 75, stopped once to pay toll, anf then i filled the tank and i got 13.9 mpg. On the way back, same speed ect and got 14.1. I thinkl thats all that i will get. I have added a leer topper to the titan and don't know if that hurt my mpg's or not

Well, you're doing better than me, I'm only getting 8mpg!!! :crying:

Or was that 13? I can never remember. As someone has in there signature, "I smile every time I stomp on the gas." :teethmast

Welcome, sorry your Titan isn't living up to your expectations. I would go to the service center of your nearest Nissan dealer and have them flash your computer to make sure it is up to date. That was suggested for a possible solution to lower than expected mpg...

Good luck!!

I was consistently getting around 11 after I first got my Titan - went on for a few months like that, then started getting up around 12...and with the last 2 tanks, I've had 13. Just right under 6000 miles now. But like you'll find, you can't be guaranteed to get higher mileage. All depends on how you drive (hwy/city) for instance. Plus it's a full size V8 what do you expect. I knew coming into having it the mileage wouldn't be good. Just cause the window sticker said 14/18 or whatever, doesn't mean you WILL actually get that. That is only an estimated mpg. Anyway, just my $.02c worth.

All I will say is the mileage this truck gets seems MUCH more sensitive to temps and driving habits than the 00'Siverado I owned. That truck got (with a 285h.p. 5.3ltr.) CONSISTANTLY got 15, no matter HOW I drove it, or HOW cold the weather got here in MN. Hwy. trips revealed 16 sometimes 17. I am NOT happy with this, and won't put up with it long if there is no fix. What is this flashing thing people are talking about??

Hope this helps

This is how I improve my mileage from 9-11mpg to about 13-16mpg on a 50/50 hwy/city driving. Some where here in titantalk I've read about disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for a least 8hrs, hence resetting the computer/ECU to default fuel/air/timing maps. This way the ECU/computer can learn your new driving habbits the next time you drive the truck.

Bit of a background :read: :read:
My previous vehicle is a Jeep Wrangler Sport with manual tranny and cable throttle, so I jack-rabbit that thing all the time, just to feel and hear the power.

When I first got my Titan, I'm driving it like my old Jeep which is wrong. Since this is a V8, "throttle-by-wire", and automatic trans, I need to adopt to the Titan and its ECU.

Then again, maybe my truck is just breakin-in to explain the mileage increase, who knows?

here's my spec's
Pearl White 04SE
CC/BT/OR/E-Lock
87oct fuel/40psi tire
Leer700 lid
No mods on the engine or exhuast
SoCal weather

Once your engine breaks in your mileage will get better. I have gotten as much as 19mpg and as low as 10mpg depending on my driving habits and situation. I got 19mpg while on a trip this past fall - Since the speed limit on the roads where I live is 55mph, I set the cruise at 60 mph for the whole trip. 2 weeks ago though I ended up having to drive through a nasty snow storm, so I kept it in 4wd the whole trip and was also pulling 2 ATV's on an 8 x 10 trailer and had a box full of ice fishing gear. Gas mileage on that trip was between 10 & 12.

I have the big tow and off road packages.

My 1st 2-3 tanks gave me about the same 10-11mpg but it has gradually improved. I get around 14-16 mpg driving 100% surface streets now. On a 800 mile trip i took last month i got 18-19 mpg...that 100% freeways @ 80-85mph. I was getting frustrated getting 10-11 mpg but its improved to the point where i expected it to perform...couldn't be happier with this awesome truck.

btw i have a 2004 SE CC 2wd non BT, OR

18-19 MPG ! ... flustrated when getting 10-11 MPG!!!.

Well... at least you guys can count Mile Per Gallon in-stead of Gallon per Mile like my boat, fully loaded with +-200 gallons of gas, 50 gal of fresh water plus food, drinks, fishing gears and family of four, I get ONE Mile per Gallon, other than that, I used to get 2 miles per gallon on the following sea and wind on my rear. Talk about burning gas heh.

Hey,
I did that too. Just for $hit and grins I thought I would try to reset the ecu and sonomabeach my milage went from 10.5-12.2 up to 13.8-19.6 and that was when I had 5200 miles on it. Just went on a trip up to Vancouver, Wa. and back to home and got 20.3 And thats no strech.

Hmmm... Interesting trick. I will have to try that...

HOW in the world can "resetting" the ECU improve your mileage?? I don't understand. You guys seem to think these are "learning" computers in the truck that "learn" driving habits?? Can anyone in the know chime in here please?? THANKS

I'll tag in to grunkster's question, by asking if I have anything to lose by resetting the ECU (i.e., disconnecting the negative terminal of the battery for 8+ hours)?

Hey Slumplord,
Last fillup was 16.4mpg; 75% highway 25% city. Can't complain, as long as I keep my foot out of it! :haveredfl
