I have on my titan 35x12.5x18 nitto trail grapplers and they are around 80+ lbs heavy tires! My question is if I go with a larger lighter weight tire that is a 37x12.5x18 that is around 70-80lbs will I get the same mpgs or will it drop even more with it being a larger diameter even though it's a lighter tire??

I just went from 35x12.5r20 mud grapplers to 37x13.5r20 mud grapplers, and my gas mileage went down, I've only driven the truck a couple times since I had them swapped, but I can tell a difference. Now going with a lighter tire may help, but idk for sure.

Why would you lose mpg going to a LIGHTER tire? Less weight means less mass the tranmsission/engine have to turn.

Right, in one aspect. The rotational mass of a 35" will be closer to the center then the 37" tire. The 37" will have weight further out, causing more work for the drivetrain. Think of it as using a breaker bar. Why do you use it? So you can get better leverage (in this case it's working against you).

Have you ever had a physics class? Or something similar?

Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking too. But I want to change to a AT tire and go bigger but with a lighter 37" tire like the BFG AT. It's about 73 lbs and is a 37" rather than my heavy a$$ nitto trails that are 80+ lbs each. If it would get about the same I'd be fine. I def know that it wont improve my mpgs any but I don't want to lose much more than I have to.

If I had to guess, I'd say they would probably be pretty close... But I can't guarantee that.

Cooper Discoverer STT weighs very close to the same as a Nitto Terra Grappler and both are lighter than both a BFG T/A KO and Trail Grappler... There was a set of 35x12.5-18 Trail Grapplers in the shop when I got my STT's mounted and they were friggin' heavy compared to the STT. Then I compared the 325/65-18 STT next to the 325/60-18 Terra Grappler that they were taking off and they felt VERY close to the same... I'm guessing it might have to do with the Silica that Cooper uses in the rubber compound and I know that Nitto doesn't use Silica at all. Like StormTroopin' said, the Leverage takes its toll though and definitely impacts the MPG.. Alot of guys on 37's have been looking for Gear Sets, that says a little something to me.

Dude, I have sh!t stains in my shorts that are older then you. I graduated from school almost 20 years ago.

A smaller tire requires more force to go the same distance as a larger tire.

6-7 lbs more per tire you won't feel. They're still going to be some heavy a$$ tires so forget about mpg's, performance and all that jazz. I don't know about you, but simply upgrading to a 57 lb tire from the stock 39 lb'ers was a huge difference for me. Acceleration, braking, mid-range punch, everything changed. I could only imagine how horrible some 80lb+ monster tires would feel on it. Ugh!!

On one call with PRG greg told me he has actually pulled better mpgs out of a light 37 over a heavy 35
