BTW what kind of gas prices are you guys paying for 93 oct in your area?
The way I look at it, 104 octane gasoline is $7.00-8.00 a gallon, I can get E85 for 2.98-3.15 gallon all day long. There is roughly 40% less energy in a gallon of E85, but that does not mean that it necessarily takes 40% more fuel to do the same work. You can purpose build an engine with much higher compression ration (and efficiency) running on 104 octane. 12-14:1 compression would not be an issue with E85. My Ram got about 15 mpg on gasoline running it hard around town and about 12.5-13 mpg on E85. Engine ran much smoother with quicker throttle response on E85.
Furthermore until they make gasoline with the same latent heat of vaporization as Ethanol blended fuel, I will gladly run the alcohol based fuel, because the intake and combustion chambers run much cooler.
Attached is a dyno sheet of my Hemi Ram that started life as a FlexFuel 4.7. The flex fuel programming was left intact in the ECM and all that I did was fill the tank with E85. The timing jumped from 26.5* to 29*, the air/fuel ratio did its thing, and as you see the HP and TQ jumped over 1.8%. The ECM had no tuning changes from gasoline, but likely would have responded even better to some specialized tuning. This was also on a 9.6:1 compression engine with a longer than stock duration camshaft.
If I were to swap the heads and raise the compression to say 11.8:1 using 09+ Eagle heads, I would have been well over 400 RWHP and the difference between gasoline and E85 would have even been larger.
All you E85 haters should have ridden in my TPI 383 powered G-van. It made 430 ft/lbs to the tires on a 9:1 383 with E85 fueling it. In the middle of summer the aluminum TPI runners and intake manifold would remain cool to the touch. Heat soak was never an issue, especially during WOT runs.
