Just returned to Edmonchuck from Calgary. No trailer this time and hardly a load at all, I did 16.5 MPG going down with a little headwind and travelling about 120 KPH. I wasn't impressed considering my 5.4 F-150 would pull off consistent 19's or higher in the same conditions.

Anyway, coming back home today, I did 20.1 MPG with little or no wind and travelling between 112 and 115 with a few jaunts up to the 130(ish) range when passing. THIS...I am happy with. Finally some decent gas mileage outta this pig.

It just clicked over 4,000 kms on the way home. Maybe it's fluke or maybe it's breaking in. I'm hoping for the latter.

By the way, doesn't anybody post around here? I've been gone for almost a week and there's been very little action in our Cdn forum.

Rizzo,

I'm on this forum at least 5 times a day...just doing a lot of reading mostly. The Canadians are posting though, just not in the Canadian section. A user going by FAUCH also from Fort Mac has posted a few items about the problems he's having. BTW, I'll be in Sherwood Park for the TimBits hockey tournament with my son this weekend. Any good places to eat and take the family?

I'm desperately trying to think of something you guys could do. Of course there is West Edmonton Mall. I can't say I go there very often (if at all). I'm not exactly a wealth of info here. I don't do much at all around here except work. That's the only reason I moved up to the Edmonton area from Calgary...why else would someone move to this place?

Things to do:
Elk Island Park (30 mins East on Yellowhead)
Come to work with me for a day (more fun than a barrel full of monkeys)
Test drive a new 350Z
Check out the black pimped out Titan at Sherwood Nissan
Check out the Moose Factory for supper $$$ (on Calgary Trail in Edmonton and the food is fantastic. Half price steaks on Monday (?))

I know this list is lame. Sorry I can't come up with anything decent.

I have have had a couple of trips with over 21 mpgs. Mostly, I am getting 14 mpg - the winter gas and short trips don't help.

Hey Keane, over 21 MPG sounds awesome. Maybe if I would have stuck to 100kph I would have done better. I don't think any of us are going to see the rated 24 MPG but I guess I never thought I would anyway.

Hey Rizzo

Since you are such a good tour guide for Edmonton :jester:
Do you happen to know of anywhere good to be in Banff. I'll be there playing hockey.

Just thought I should post because I mostly just lurk, without adding much to the fray.

Mileage with Trailer

Just pulled my 30ft Trail Cruiser (GVWR 5877lbs - Hitch Dry Weight 277lbs) from Calgary to Windermere. Wrestled with the wind bringing it back to town from Guarantee on Friday afternoon.

Topped up the tank at Deadman's Flats
4/2/2005 89.9cents/l 32.311 litres 16,380 odometer

Speed from here to Windermere 80 - 90 kmh

Dropped off the TT at Windermere then headed back to town. Few extra clicks back home around town...

4/5/2005 86.4cents/l 87.962 litres purchased 16,879 odometer

Fuel economy calculated on clagarygasprices for the trip and add-on
15.95 mpg.

I am running about 14 mpg in the city and around 19 to 20 on the highway.

With about 3000 litres consumed (ouch).

last six full tanks of gas I've been averaging 14.53 MPG. Most of this is highway though. Last tank I had in the city was 10.71 MPG. YIKES! Gotta lay off that pedal!

Well, the last time my truck went down to Edmonton from Fort mac It achived ∞ MPG...thats right...infinite mpg!! Not a drop of fuel.....BECAUSE IT WAS HAULLED DOWN THERE ON A FLAT BED TRUCK!!! The P.O.S. won't even start for me now!!

*deep breath*...ok, im done my ranting for today.

I hate reading Fauch's posts about his problems. Hopefully things are resolved soon.

Hunter, hopefully it's not too late to respond to your Banff question. I've been busy lately and haven't visited the site in a while. I'm an old guy (35 years old today) so i like the night life at the Rose and Crown. It is lively enough but still not the club type atmosphere. As far as eating/drinking, we like the St. James Gate. It is amazing food and all the beer you could possibly enjoy in an evening.

Johnson's Canyon is nice if you're up for a hike. It is about 30 minutes west of Banff but has some nice waterfalls etc. We once saw a lady hiking in her high heeled shoes. It looked like she just came from church. It was hilarious.

Anyway, the Saltlik is supposed to be an really nice place to eat $$$ but I've never been there. Also, the Grizzly House is a place where you can fondue some funky stuff like grasshopper and frog legs etc. They also have normal stuff that tastes pretty good. It was different for sure.

The Cave and Basin, the hot springs and Banff Spring Hotel are always nice to visit. The entire history of the discovery of Banff is explained at the Cave and Basin and the hotel has an amazing history as well (my buddy is the assistant director of security so don't stir anything up or you'll probably meet him :eeeek: :brownsmil :brownsmil :brownsmil

I'm sure I'll think of a bizillion more things to do after I go to bed but I betcha you'll discover them all after being there for a bit. You'll have a blast for sure. A buddy of mine plays in a hockey tournament down there every year and he always manages to have a blast.

It's often all about the dealer

I have had good success with my dealer...right from the get go on price...saved well over a grand than from another dealer.

They have been great and the "break judder" problem gets fixed on Wednesday...with the dealer planning to take care of all four corners (with only the front two having noticeable/minor issues).

My Titan has only 7,000 km on it and the best MPG I've gotten is 20.8 mpg (highway) so far for my past four fills, it's averaging 17.5 mpg (70% highway; 30% city) . Highway speed around 106 kph.

Can't wait to start towing my 6,000 travel trailer and see what kind of mileage I get then.

2wd

Your gas mileage could be better because you have a king Cab (lighter) and 2wd (lighter and less friction/moving parts). I haven't been able to repeat my almost 21 mpg as I drive faster and I always have 4 or 5 people in the truck with luggage. My over-all average since I got the truck is: 14.45 MPG Canadian,

Thats 12.03 US MPG.

Travel Trailers and Titans

R-Vision Tr. Cruiser Tt 30QBSS is the trailer that I am pulling...

Huge Caution on Travel Trailers. Recall that the Touareg only advertised for a little while that it could tow an airstream. Pulling capacity is one thing put hitch weight is another.

If you look at the payload capacity for the Titan models you need to be sure that you don't exceed your payload with your travel trailer.

I have a fully dressed CC and with DVD which adds into the payload, wife, little ones there is not much room left for the weight of a trailer.

Typically you count on about 10% of the TT weight for the hitch weight it adds up very very fast. There are plenty of lawsuits in the US and a few in Canada with truck / trailer owners being over capacity and in a position of negligence.

We really liked units like Travel Air, etc. but when they hit the 8 0r 9000 lb mark and you take 10% for hitch weight you've got 800 or 900 lbs of travel trailer added to your payload. Check the sticker on the door and you may find that you are travelling by yourself or loosing weight.

An equalizer hitch just distributes weight through the axles through a little bit of leverage one frames, it takes the weight directly off the pin and doesn't make it go away.

I believe that there was another post on the Canadian Forum signing the blues with respect to trailer and Titan payload...do not be fooled by the dealer that tells you with 9300 lb pulling capacity you can pull anything.

There are lots of "light" trailers out there with benefits on each type. We also looked at several where the fit and finish was not great.

Good luck.

(Blew my brains out in the last 12 months - Titan, Travel Trailer and a little sea ray parked at a BC lakeside campground...come on summer.)

I'm having second thoughts about the 05 LE CC I have on order. The relatively low payload might be a problem.

Seems like most decent sized travel trailers ( say 21' to 25' ) have a dry hitch weight of 400 - 600 lbs. The LE CC has a payload of 1162 lbs, leaving about 600 lbs for people, gear, gas, etc.

Does the published payload of 1162 lbs include a full tank of gas?

Any idea on how much the dry hitch weight increases after the TT is loaded with water, propane, food, and a 40 pounder of Crown?

I've heard horror stories of the B.C. Highway cops catching people over their GVWR and making them unhook the TT right then and there ( or leave the whole rig). Then a guy has to find a truck with a larger payload to haul the TT home ( or at least to the Alberta border). Same deal with having 2 snowmobiles in the back of your 1/2 ton.

Has anybody's truck/TT weight been checked while travelling through B.C.?

It was an issue for me as well. I just ordered a TT with a 362# hitch weight. Assuming my family is about 400#, a full tank of gas is 200# that leaves me with about 143# for cargo. I figure that once the TT is loaded it would at no more than 50# on the hitch. I just have to load the trailer properly and make sure that most of my cargo for longer trips is on the trailer. It's going to be a problem when my kids grow up. Right now they only weigh about 80 together. I'll deal with it when it happens. I love the Titan and I do use it as a daily driver. I couldn't see myself driving a 3/4 tonne Chevy every day, but that's where I"ll likely end up in a few years unless Nissan comes out with one. The trailer I bought is a Wildwood Ultra Light 2601. It is 27'2" long with a GVWR of about 6000# so I can load it up instead of the truck. I bought it at Trailblazer RV in Leduc/Nisku

362# dry hitch weight is pretty light for a trailer that size. I'll have to check out those ultra-lights when I get around to replacing my 1974 21 footer.

I did some internet searching last night, and came across some good GVWR info on the BC gov't website. Payload rating is on top of a full tank of gas. Also said that the GVWR rating of a vehicle could be increased by a Transport Canada approved facility, but would probably be cost prohibitive.

Here's the address: http://www.pc.gov.bc.ca/cmg/newweb/GVW.htm

I'm in Alberta, where 5 years ago when I checked, it wasn't illegal to run over the GVWR. The guy at the weigh station on Hwy 16 by Ardrossan said they could only nail you with overloading your tires. Still, I would hate to have a 2 week holiday in B.C. ruined by getting caught over the GVWR. I suppose they are only looking for the obvious offenders with the butt end of a 1/2 ton truck dragging low while pulling a 36 foot 5th wheel.

I wonder what part of the Titan is the limiting factor when the engineers calculate its GVWR.
