Does anyone know why the dip stick for the trans is screwed in place?
I looked in the owners manual and there is no reference to checking it. All other fluids are mentioned. I unscrewed mine, checked it and had resistance trying to put it back in. It was up to the full mark.

I think it's to keep us from using the wrong transmission fluid. You have to use a special Nismo fluid.

I understand your point, but why aren't they recommending even checking it?
Are you aware of the magnuson moss warranty act? It says something to the effect that if a manufacturer says you MUST use an item they make or will affect your warranty, they must provide it free. If No one else sells trans fluid that is acceptible to them then they should supply it to us free. So far nobody in here has found it in a local store. The other day there was a posting about who makes it (castrol?) but they told him it's sold through Nissan. We need to be able to buy it elsewhere too.
They also used to point out the platinum plugs were good for 100,000
miles, now they don't. Nissan also used to push the point of mirror polished crank shafts , that too isn't mentioned. This is my 11th Nissan, so I'm aware of what was and what is.

I spoke with my local service department about this fluid issue. They did agree with me that nissan can't tell me to use only there fluid. But this still leaves us the issue of finding a fluid we can use as a substitute. I have read post on bob is the oil guy web site asking this very issue what can we use as a substitute. A person asked lubegard company how can we meet the specification of matic j. QUOTE "You can use a good grade full synthetic ATF such as Mobil 1, Redline, Amsoil est., with Lubegard Platinum to make an equivalent to Nissanmatic J ATF".
But I personally would feel better if a ATF oil manufacturer would say on the back of there bottle that its equivalent to J matic.
So I guess if your at that 30,000 mile stage, you'll have to ask your self a question do I pay $15.00 to $22.00 a quart or try other methods of obtaining J matic specifications.

I dont believe matic J from the dealership is 15 to 30 dollars a quart more like 9 to 10 dollars
Its 12-16 dollars at the dealership, believe me.

The J-Matic fluid is comparable to the castrol fluid many people say but you may have to double check that with the castrol company. I called nissan and their policy is to say "use nissan J matic fluid and nothing else" so I really can't get a straight answer about using other fluids so take your chances.

I plan on running Amsoil synthetic ATF in mine when I get my parts back. That's what the shop that's doing the work to my stuff is recommending.

My dealer sent me a print out with the recommended maintenance services for the Titan/Armada including prices.
The price for the 30,000 mile transmission fluid replacement is $99.95.
This seemed really cheap so I called to make sure this wasn't a typo and they assured me this was right.
24,550 miles so it won't be long now.

Yea your probably right but replacement is different then flush.

Replacement can mean different things to different people but as far as I know the standard is drain and refill and does not mean they clean the pan or replace the filter screen but this can vary from shop to shop.

Flush is when a one to one replacement is done, but even goes a bit further buy replacing all the oil even in the cooler and transmission lines as well. How they do this is with a machine that is connected to the transmission cooler lines. The transmission pump does the work by pumping out the old and in the new from this reservoir.

This is just info some people might know this and others might not.

The way they explained it to me is that they have this fancy dancy EPA approved contraption that will suck out all the old tranny fluid and pressure replace the tranny with new fluid?

It's better to have the trans circulate the new fluid rather than to have the machine push it through. Pressure from an outside source can harm the trans.

I always thought the same as you because this machine has a pump on it but this pump is only used for recharge of the oil reservoir I suppose their can be other machines that does the same thing in different ways but I have not see one. Squid I am not saying what your dealer told you was wrong or even the price is wrong but dealers can play with the meaning of words. For me mechanics, lawyers, doctors are all crooks till proof-en other wise.

PS Ad this to my list of companies I don't trust air conditioning and heating companies and pestcontrol companies
