Okay I've heard about diff’s going, but have you seen a diff and transfer case go at the same time. The service guy explained the transfer case failed first, and then messed up the diff. He hopes to get new ones in on Wed have the truck ready for Friday, I got my fingers crossed. They got me in a Ford, what can I say it’s a Ford, nothing special. By the way truck is 05 CC LE OR, BT with 15000 miles.

Another dealer BS story. That can't be. The transfer case either sends power or it doesn't. It doesn't go in and out, it only spins. Even if it were somehow able to push or pull on the driveshaft, that would be meaningless. Let us know what happens.

It can happen. I am currently replacing a transfer case and a rear diff in a 02 Pathfinder. The guy was getting ready to drive cross country and had his local dealer do some maintenance. They drained the transfer case and forgot to fill it up. Some how he got pretty far before the transfer case shelled out, and locked up the rear diff causing him to go into a spin. He's lucky he didn't get killed. It can happen.

Not directly it can't. That's like saying rear brake failure can damage the grill...sure, if it causes you to smash into something. The rear end and transfer case are not directly connected other than by the driveshaft. The driveshaft locking and causing damage to the rear end is a stretch, but a slight possibility. That's not what happened to the original posters rear end.

How do you know? All he said was the xfer case failed first then the diff. If the case locks up and the rear tires dont, guess what happens to the gears in the diff?

I'm not trying to be an äss here, but you're being a little narrow minded don't you think?

If that were true, the first time you did a burnout the rearend would grenade.
I may be mistaken, but I think all the diff failures were spider gears or the shaft the spiders ride on. This situation you describe would not stress the spider gears.

If you hold the drive shaft from rotating and force the tires to rotate you will damage your diff or break your axles.

I'm thinking at speed a xfer case lockup would strip gears in a diff before snapping the axles off.

Either or you can't assume what will and will not happen. That's all I am getting at.

To answer your question, nothing! If the transfer case locks up...you'd know it. It would be like slamming on the brakes. All the damaging torque would be in the transfer case which would strip those gears probably instantly. Does your rear blow out during hard acceleration or a burnout? no....is it possible?...anythings possible...just not probably, that's all I'm saying. So no, I'm not being narrow minded, just realistic. For a Nissan tech to blurt out something so improbable without tearing anything down, he has to be grasping at straws. Typical when they have no answer...that's all I'm saying. And no, I wasn't thinking you were being an azz, your arguement is perfectly valid and I do see your point. Merry Christmas!

Ahh you have the dealership rage in you :poke:

^Believe me I have a few of those under my belt.

I go in for a tail light recall, after it's all done and I see the service manager this is part of the convo.

Honda: Sir we rotated your tires for you.
Me: Uhhh it's a staggered setup you can't rotate them.
Honda: yes you can front to back.
Me: Front are 205 with a 55mm offset 6.5" rim and rear is 245 with a 65mm offset on a 7.5" rim. You DON'T rotate these tires.
Honda: Are you sure about that?
Me: (a little upset now). I don't have the time to argue with you. I'll take my keys and fix your error when I get home thanks.
