So I was driving around and I turned right after stoping and then i heard it... it sounded like the locker was engaged but it was not... you know when a locker engages there is to sounds when you turn left or right and the tires will chirp and then axel binds and pops (if you turn hard enough) i didn't hesitate i took it in...

well i've heard horror stories about how people take there trucks in and the service guy is an butt... the service guy was very receptive and took it right away... he said that he'll talk to me the next day... the following day he called and said that they need to order a new axel assymbly and that would take a week because the day i took it in Nissan said they are on back order but the next day it was releaed and that they do not send it on air frieght so he called entirpise and got me in a 2006 Chevy 1500 Silverado with 5100 miles on it... man that is a peice of monkey poo

im a conservative driver and that thing was all over the road... around corners the back end wanted to beat the front around the turn... anyways i put like 500 miles on it and could not wait to get my truck back... the day i got it back was so nice and the service guy was awsome no questions asked he took it in and got it back to me fast as he could... he works at Tim Dahle Nissan of Sandy, Utah the best Nissan Dealer around...

The axel is built by a third-party "DANA CORP" and the locker is also manufactured by a thrid-party (i think Eaton but not sure and not sure about the e-locker) i understand that Nissan is resonsible for the parts that are to go on a surtain vehicle but when the thrid-party builds that part wrong (enginereeing/Machining/Forging ect.) why does it fall in Nissan's lap when it should fall to the thrid-parties (Nissan sold 250,000 units in one year and maybe 3% of all units have this issue)

What do you Think?

I am tired of story tellers with low post counts

the proof is in the pudding and I never get full

got any pics?

dont see many pics anymore of damaged parts
Voodoo....i noticed that also..

I really an honestly hope you didn't have a diff failure.

Your low post count makes 1 belive you "could" be a troll just here 2 bash a Nissan product..

If i am wrong i am sorry...just wouldn't be the 1st time

Sounds like the classic spider gear failure being reported by others. But it would be nice to see photos and get a report on what the tech finds when the repair is done.

It is troublesome to see reports coming from people who do not regularly participate in the board and only come here to report a problem. That does raise some suspicion.

I notice that the poster tows a pretty heavy boat and may have upgraded to a heavier one, based on some of his posts. Could you tell us what break-in procedure you used for the diff before heavy towing?

But we do sympathasize. The occurence is a very small percentage of owners, but it is happening.

The tech said nissan told him not to touch the rear end and they would send out a new axel assymbly... so no pics... and it is the finned diff cover...

I drove very carefully (tried to run at low rpms) for the frist 2500 miles and got the diff oil changed when i was supposed to... I didn't tow a heavy load until I had 3500 miles...

why cant nissan just replace the diff assembly? are they to incompetent? this makes no sense. They could stock the diff's and be ready to change them on short notice instead of waiting weeks for an entire rear end to be shipped in.

For the same reason you don't go to just any automotive place to have a rear end or transmission replaced. There is more to a diff install then just removing the old one and inserting a new one. Also everything I have read says the axles are supplied by Dana. If this is true to the letter, then Dana is shipping the entire assembly to Nissan complete and all Nissan does is fill it with lube and/or isnatll the cover.

It all has to do with how Nissan is reinbursed/time charged for warranty work. I agree that they could just replace the innards of the diff and be done but Dana replaces them as a unit.

No, actually that about covers it. Of course, it takes knowledge to set it up right and shim it correctly, but should not be outside the realms of any decent tech. Ive changed them myself before, its not rocket science. Nissan has no excuse for this. Its bad enough they diffs are crap to begin with, but to make you wait for a whole new rear just makes it worse. And makes no sense at all. Gee, lets replace the entire rear axle housing and assembly because of a couple failed spider gears in the differential portion?

It must be either like hudson valley said, they cant get the differential by itself, which there shouldnt be any reason they cant, or they dont think thier own techs are competent enough to do the job correctly.

And there is the reason. Some of Nissan's (or any brand actually)tech's and service departments can't handle doing much simpler tasks right. There is a reason Austin went to a drivetrain specialist when he had his TruTrac installed.

If my diff went, I'd like to have it all replaced. Not just sorted through, replace some bad parts and call it a day. Only replacing some bad gears leaves alot of other potential parts that may have been damaged but are not visible unless seriously looked over. I'd rather not go back in a few months to have more pieces replaced if Iwere a customer.
