Melted Wire Harness from broken tailpipe

My tailpipe fell off melting the main rear wire harness. I saw that there were several threads on this, but no real fix for the wires.

My main issue was the passenger side abs. The wires became brittle and broke. After several attempts to fix this issue by splicing wires together… I became annoyed and wanted it fixed correctly.

I ordered the main rear wire harness on the internet and my work started.

First I verified that the new harness matched the old. I traced each plug and counted wires just to be sure.

Here is the main plug. It is located right behind the front passenger wheel along the frame.

I went along the frame rail removing the harness and installing the new one. Needle nose pliers where a big help here.

The First wire off the harness is the fuel pump. I did not get pictures of it… only because I couldn’t get my camera in there.

Next plug would be the passenger rear ABS wire. I did not take a picture of it because I had previously cut it off and spliced the abs wires togeather.

At the very back passenger rear is the plug connector for the passenger tail lights.

To get the harness over to the driver side… you will need to drop your spare tire

Once you make to the driver side… you will hit three more connectors. Drives side taillights, trailer harness, and license plate lights.

The harness will now be routing from the rear drivers side up to the evaporator box (I think that is what it is called)

Once you get to that box… there will be three more plugs. 2 in the evap box and 1 for the rear drivers ABS

Here is a pic of one of the plugs for the evap. The other is directly beside it.

After I was done… I reviewed each plug to make sure it was connected properly and to make sure that harness was routed correctly without any rubbing or against any heat source.

Hopefully this will help someone else with this same issue.

great job! I repaired one of these on a titan...same thing happened!! I did the same as you. The truck actually stopped running correcrly because they became so bad. Broken tailpipe caused the whole thing!

I noticed a while back that my tail pipe was a little off, didn't think anything of it, then my trailer brake started shorting out. Looked underneath and noticed the plastic protective covering on the wires by the rear passenger tire was melted away and some wires exposed. Googled the issue and found this page. It had not rained here in about 2 months. I was out driving this past weekend in the wet stuff and all of the sudden my ABS and SLIP lights came on, along with no turn signals.

I called the dealership and asked about part number and price. The gave me the number and quoted me $486 for the part and roughly $500 for the install. I am glad I didn't go that route. This fix was quite easy, except for taking off the old plugs. Some are sticky and the fuel pump plug is not the easiest to get at (I found if you took off the rear drivers side tire and the plastic piece; that was your best access point).

If you have a pair of needle nose pliers and a screw driver, you can do this yourself.

Thanks to Chris Cabe at Tasca Parts Group he was able to get me the part I needed at $183! Altogether this took about 2hrs, would be less if I had a hoist. Thank you Was240 for this post, you saved me a lot of time and money.

My 05 Titan LE had a previous owner who did a hack job on the electrical hitch connector, causing one rear tail light bulb to not work. Already replaced the short tail light harness and bulbs. So I will buy and test a new main rear harness next.

Question on which one to get: I have an oem tow button, but the hitch is after market non oem.

Should I pay extra and get the main rear wiring harness with the extra towing attachment? Since I already have a hitch.

Any input would be greatly appriciated.

Thanks in advance

The OEM tow mode button has nothing to do with anything past the transmission. FYI.

I just ordered a new harness for $180 at the dealerahip. Told me 1k for labor and said i had to take the bed off and jack up the cab???? Its been raining so i havnt looked but i can't understand why.

Where did you find the new harness at? I’ve called a couple dealerships and none have any info on it
I had my titan in for a couple recalls so I asked them to trouble shoot the ABS code and then found the burnt harness and quoted me on parts and labour.

The actual part I understand came from a Nissan dealership in Calgary Alberta.
