Agreed...
It was a 8 percent ish uphill grade with snow, ice, gravel mix... so mixed traction per tire in 4 lo locked.
So not just as easy “towing” like a trailer.

Throw it in four low and up a mixed traction (rocks, loose dirt, etc) very steep hill scrambling up off roading, that would be much more punishing on the truck then this was. This is the kind of basic “stuff” that most modern day trucks should be built for. Beyond towing and hauling loads to there max.
A new Truck shouldn’t fail in any of this.

Were the front wheels spinning, then caught traction right before the bang? This is an issue on the Frontiers/Xterras--the spider gears break when shock loaded. If you weren't having wheel slip before it happened, then it was probably just a manufacturing defect. Trucks aren't designed to tow in 4-lo, but I still wouldn't expect this to happen.

I have no qualms about towing in 4Lo, but I take it really, really easy.

I'd stop pulling cars out of ditches ( unless it's a emergency situation ) .

This brings the old saying of “no good deed goes unpunished” comes to mind.
I’m a kind and helpful person to a point but do not risk my property to look like a hero. I’d flip out if mine broke and then have no truck to use for work the next day.

You can explain that to my wife then. It was her wrx in the ditch with our 6mo kiddo.
Tow trucks were 1-2 hour wait due to road conditions.

Sounds like most of you have never used a “truck” before

So I should just use it to go to the mall or pickup groceries.
Seems that you had one tire gripping & one not, that can be catastrophic to any axle.
You don't see tow trucks running around with 1/2 tons, do you ?
These trucks are known to have weak axles & still do..
A Winch would be more appropriate.

Of course you’re going to help your Mrs. and your baby, many guys on the forums talk about their “saves”, they go out look to help anybody, kind of like a notch in their belt. I’m on my 11th pickup and all are used as a truck as they are purchased for my business so I can provide nicely for my family which is why I don’t push my luck because if something fails the dealer won’t lend me a truck with a bed cover to earn a living. At that point renting a box truck now cost me money and I’m not looking for money going out, only coming in.
My cute little kiddies are all grown up and now I’m paying off student loans that cost about $50,000 each kid per year so my two kids is $400,000, now you know why I have to keep plugging along and keep the truck on the road. I’m surprised the Subaru got stuck in the first place, they usually do very well.
Enjoy that bundle of joy, they grow up far faster than you know.

When operating in 4-Lo, I think the owner's manual specifies to NOT give it too much throttle. I think you're supposed to operate at lower RPMs in 4-Lo. I could be wrong, but I did read the manual to ensure I'm not using it improperly, as this is the 1st 4WD truck I've owned. I've had AWD (full-time) vehicles before, so this is new to me.

Ice roads and 2’ snow in the ditch. Subaru (or any truck) not getting out of the ditch on its own. Besides helping a neighbor get unstuck from the neighborhood. I don’t seek out yanking cars out.
Have 2 horses on our property.
Truck haul 1500 lbs plus horse feed. Rocks for landscaping. Tow horse trailer. Drive to work daily. Tow stumps out on my property. Have a small kubota tractor to, if that gets stuck. Pull out with truck. So my trucks my daily drive and I use it for truck stuff weekly as I have all my past trucks!
The dealership was nice enough to give me a loaner for the week.

Considered a Titan Xd. From reading the diesel has issues! The front frame is stronger then the non xd. Cab back the frames are almost the same.
But gas in either Titan the running gear is pretty much the same in each truck. The gas xd was $8k more! For hardly any more tuck..
I could trade the truck in now loaded pro4x with 3500 miles for a new xd and pay $15k more.....
Had a super duty before. That was a giant pos.
Am I asking the Titan to be a truck. Yes. Do I sometimes ask it to stretch is capabilities. Some. Not by much. And it’s not a regular occurrence.

Reading these Titan forums and tundra forums. There are trucks occasionally loaded over 2k and no issues.

I wouldn’t ever try to pull a stuck vehicle out in 4-low. We’ve always used 4-high. I wouldn’t use 4-low with any additional weight bearing down on the truck.

4-low might be okay if you’re on dry pavement with excellent traction pulling something out of mud or sand, but 4-low is meant for very slow speeds. If you get your tires spinning too fast and hard it’s going to go badly.

Typically 4-low is not supposed to go faster than 10-20mph depending on vehicle. Look at your manuals to find out exact numbers. 4-high will usually work up to around 40-60mph depending on vehicle. I think my 18 pro-4x said 55mph... but read your own manual to be sure.

I hardly EVER use 4-low. Just when driving through VERY nasty sand, mud, or snow on already rough and unfavorable roads extremely slowly. I’ve always concidered 4-low to be a last resort if 2wheel or 4-high couldn’t get me out.

I’ve seen dodge, Chevy, ford, and Toyota trucks do what your Titan did. I’ve seen Dodge trucks with transfer case problems a lot. Typically always after pulling someone else out of a situation.

Five months out of the year I have 4 hi engaged 70% of the time during the winter at all speeds 70+ mph on snow freeway etc. It’s called snow and ice that doesn’t go away! Every truck or suv up here in Alaska same thing.

Towing Subaru out of ditch I wanted the locker engaged as left side of truck in 10” snow. Right side on snow, ice, gravel mix. Only option is 4 low for this!
I use 4 low a few times a year. Very low traction. Need locker. Need slow hill decent. Most from snow\ice
If anyone used recover strap, get almost tight, stop. Other car starts on gas then you go. Relying then on the slight bungee snap effect from strap. Done this countless times. Cars. Stumps. Mud. Trucks. Tractors. Etc. basic living!

It’s about being proactive! Vs reactive. What is the best setup i want my truck in to enter into this situation

NOT oh crap I’m now stuck. Let me engaged my xyz lock mode now that I’m done for

Pulled my daughter's Suzuki SX4 (FWD) out of slush one time and recently out of a major situation when both right side wheels were in a snow covered deep ditch. Used the front hooks and backed the truck to pull both times. The last time used 2WD (just forgot) while keeping the car facing front, wheels slightly turned left (just light pressure on the steering wheel, as the wheels had no room to turn left) and transmission in drive - my better half was in the car as it was being pulled out. The car just eased itself out without damage. Hopefully, your truck will be back to new. Just a freak event.
