The 04-07 cluster is far nicer than the 08+, has nicer needles, is 3 dimensional, each gauge has it's own frame. The only problem with the 04-07 gauges is the darn ugly orange LED lighting. I don't know how Nissan managed to do it, but they have picked the worst color of LED, it's kinda yellowish.....Toyota orange LEDs looked nicer.
So, many, many years ago I swapped the LEDs inside my cluster to white, red and blue. I used very high output red LEDs under the needles, white LEDs for the field, standard red LEDs for the LCD screen, and then I underlayed some parts of the cluster with colored gels.
It's not that hard to do, I am a lazy, impatient person and I managed to get it done. How easy is it? Well, even though I ruined my 4x4 switch trying to LED-swap it, I was successful with my cluster. I think I did the cluster 8-9 years ago, never had an issue. The mileage doesn't change, and for some reason, the Nissan dealer has never said anything to me (I did this as far back as when my warranty was still in effect, Nissan never complained when I had work done).
The new cluster lighting nicely complemented the original orange lighting in the rest of the truck so well I decided to not change anymore colors. Previously the ugly orange lighting was overwhelming, the addition of white, red and some blue LED colors balances it out very well. Looks stock, too!
My old Photobucket pics of the project are gone, but here's some not so good pics of my cluster when I was more concerned about low fuel or my new red LED overhead lighting:
