Seven months ago I got it in my head that I was ready for a new truck. I had owned my Titan since 2007 and had put nearly 200,000 miles on it. Had almost zero problems with it until about 180,000 miles when a few things were popping up; like AC compressor, power steering rack, small oil leaks, u-joints…oh and the exhaust manifolds were cracked since about 100kmi. I was tempted to keep fixing it since I am mechanically inclined but I also wanted a nicer truck. Ended up getting a good deal on a new F-150 Raptor.
Honestly I miss my Titan now. Mostly nostalgia because I had so many memories with the old truck; but there are certain practical aspects of the truck that I miss. The Raptor crowd HATES me for saying this but I don’t think the Raptor is all that its cracked up to be. Especially for the price tag. Numerous off road outings have shown me that unless high speed maneuvers are involved the Raptor isn't much more capable than my friends lifted 4x4 trucks. I have no problem affording the Raptor but considering my disappointment I’d like to trade down to something less expensive.
I find myself wanting to go back to a Titan but just can’t accept the new 2nd gen styling. The front end is oddly shaped and disproportionate to the cab. Also, moving the gear selector to the column, the light switch to the dash, the swoop-down door (where my hand rests), and the awful 1990s Japanese car-like interior door handles all truly bother me. I’m also concerned about the longevity of the engine with direct-injection; and question if the overall build quality is as good as the first gen. Resale value on Nissan trucks is terrible so if I went back it would have to be for the long haul. So here I am waiting to see if perhaps Nissan will redo the Titan again anytime soon.
