That’s why it’s called a parking brake, you’re always supposed to use it. Mine is used every time I park my vehicles. Then there are those who call it an emergency brake.

I think Nissan may have over complicated the park pawl on the 9 speed transmission. The 7 speed park pawl was pretty straight forward cable operated park lock. Not so much for the 9 speed. The 9 speed is actuated by an electrical signal coupled with hydraulic pressure from an electric pump located in the transmission valve body. When the truck is parked the pump operates an actuator that pushes on a rod that in turn pushes the park pawl into the park ring gear. Park is then sensed by a magnetic position sensor read by the TCM. Good grief. Makes me wonder what exactly they will do for the fix.

My friend has a towing company and has made more than a few calls to help people who’s vehicle is stuck in park due to the weight of the vehicle jamming it in park.
You all do as you wish but the parking brake is there to hold the car not the pawl.

Would specific cars have the common issue? I have had cars/trucks and I never have experienced the lock up. My old subaru with cvt even didn't have that issue.

If you don’t use it and one day try it the cables are known to seize inside the casing and get stuck on then you need a flat bed and new cables. Using them all the time stops that from occurring.
Again, I do me and you do you, stay safe out there.

Could not agree more! I park my truck (every vehicle for that matter), apply brake, apply parking brake not ‘emergency brake’, depress brake pedal then shift into park.

This places the entire weight of the vehicle ont he parking brake and not on the transmission.

However, given the crazy parking brake nowadays vs old school cable, can’t imagine why recalls lol

Transmissions are designed for putting power from the engine to the wheels. Brakes are made for slowing/stopping/holding a vehicle in place. This is why I have never relied on my transmission to hold my vehicle in place. Therefore, I need to do nothing different than I already do here.

Well spoiler alert, it's based on a Mercedes design, so we got a tad of that "German Engineering" going on here.

Yup. Mercedes 9G-tronic transmission plans, produced by JATCO in Japan for the Titan as the JR913E09. Basically the same or similar tranny, providing the different production plants offer the same quality.

I had a good reason to use the parking brake this weekend in Austin, but I keep forgetting since it's an auto. Parking on the hills whn I would get in and try to shift to reverse, you could hear and feel terrible clank from the transmission trying to shift. Made me cringe each time and I would comment to my wife that I need to use the e-brake.

I use it every time in the ranger, of course it's a stick

I doubt my parking brake would even hold the truck, every time I apply it when hooking up our trailer the damn truck still moves forward a few inches until the transmission catches it....it's aggravating trying to hook up to our trailer on an incline, I have to intentionally overshoot the coupler by 2-3" and then set the parking brake and wait for it to roll forward..

Have you ever adjusted it or requested to have it adjusted?

Using the parking brake definitely eliminates any possibility of torque lock in the transmission. I usually set my parking brake then shift to neutral and let the truck come to a rest against the brake. Once it's settled I then shift to park and turn off. Helps eliminate any stress on the pawl and makes for easy and quiet shifts from park when leaving.

Not yet, hasn't even got to it's second oil change.

I'll mention it next time I take it to the dealership.

*Edit - I adjusted the cable, it was way out of adjustment from the factory since it's never really worked, add in a year to allow for cable stretch and it was pretty much useless. Hopefully it works better now.

I saw this article a few days ago and figured it would be disseminated and dissected every which way in here. :ROFLMAO: I use my parking brake all the time, and I actually don't like putting my car in gear when parked (I know a lot of people say that's not a good practice, but I've seen too many people start a car in an enclosed space and watch the car lurch forward manual transmission --- video added for your entertainment... ). I can't remember where I saw it, but I remember a scene where a guy loaned someone their car. The person left the car in gear and didn't apply the parking brake. The owner of the car screamed at the other person, "The transmission is NOT a kickstand!" For whatever reason, that line stuck with me. One day I used it on my BiL (he has this annoying habit of breaking other peoples' things) when I let him borrow my truck and got a good laugh out of him. I definitely do hate letting the car's weight sit up against the transmission. I figure replacing brake pads is cheaper than replacing a transmission.
