My brother has an '04 Titan and is in the process of replacing the (automatic) transmission. The problem is the top two bolts (engine to transmission). They were apparently tightened far beyond specs. He's used penetrating spray but can't get the bolts to loosen, plus it's really hard to get any tools up in there. He's even ready to cut off the bolt heads, but again, no room to maneuver in there. So my question is, does anyone have experience with removing difficult-to-remove transmissions, and what would you suggest we try to get those last two bolts out of there so he can drop the tranny? Any special tools anyone has tried successfully? Any and all help will be appreciated.

For better access, try removing the crossmember (support the trans with a jack before you do this) and gently, slowly, carefully lower the tail of the transmission so you have better access. Might even be able to get an impact on them to break them loose, but I'd start with very low pressure (like an air ratchet, not an impact wrench). The key here is to lower the trans just a tiny bit so you don't overstress the motor mounts, but with the trans crossmember out of the way, you can lower it enough to maybe get to those bolts. Also, it might help to put a few of the other bolts back into the trans bellhousing so all the pressure/stress isn't on the bolts you want to break free. Cinch up a couple on the sides and see if the top ones will loosen when the whole trans isn't hanging on them.
