2* Timing Advance - For Free!

1336 Views 20 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  anmut
I have to admit I caught a big fat lucky break today! I was car shopping with the wife and we stopped in to a Nissan dealership to look at some used Muranos. I happened to the service department to ask about getting the advance done. After check with his tech to see if it was possible he said to come back after lunch.

So when we came back I pulled my truck in and apparently the salesman had told him that we were there to drive some more vehicles. The service manager came up to me and said "Alright - I'll get them to do the advance and we'll put down that you came in because your Check Engine light was on so we don't have to charge you any shop time." I couldn't believe it! Advance done - and a great relationship with a new, albeit farther away, Nissan dealership.

Whoo hoo! Btw ButtDyno says the 2* on an 08 is well worth it.

You lucky dog you. Congrats! So, Butt Dynos work. :)
So they didn't have any problems doing it on an 08?

No issues - the tech warned that if i lost my battery and all power the setting would also be lost. Don't know how true that is - sounds believable.
I'm taking mine on Mon.. I have a $25 gift card from them for turning in the Nissan survey directly to them, so even if they charge me it'll still be free.
Right on man!! Glad to hear someone got a good deal.

Today I asked my dealership about the 2* advance and they said it wasn't possible due to the computer consatantly changing the timing due to changing variables......WTF!!
Yeah - I had one dealer give me the same run around. Another said it couldn't be done because the computer reverts after 5 restarts. What I eventually did before I ran into this crazy amount of luck was print off the instructions on from this site and bring it into their tech.
There has been disagreement on losing it from battery being disconnected overnight. Solid answers been given both ways. Most now say you cannot. ???
In my experiences with computers - when you make a change to a motherboard bios chip it will forget that change if you lose power. But you can overwrite the bios chip with new code that won't erase after a power loss.

In my humble opinion I would think that we are just changing some settings - settings that could be loss on a full power loss. But I've been known to be wrong in the past. :)

I've asked two different service reps at the dealership I use, two different visits, and they both looked at me like I asked them in a Martian language...BRUTAL!!!:stab:

Bring them the printed out steps - their techs can then explain it to the service manager wtf you want done.

I told my tech that I will do just that. He said to bring the info and he would take a look at it. SO at least they will do that.
Any techs that don't know how to advance the timming should not be a tech at all.
Are these the instructions you used?

"Yes, I was able to get it to programm, I did mine & 3 others.
Tricky cause our Consult 3 did not have 08 options so i accessed through a
2007 350 z
After consult3 has connected to car :
1. Press Wrench sign upper Right side of screen.
2. Press ECM/Wrench sign just below Large Wrench sign
3. Press Engine / OK
4. Work Support
5. Engine timing at bottom of list
6. Fallow prompts to +2
!!!!!! make sure they actual hit the UP-DATE BUTTON !!!!!!
or it will not save..
Make sure engine is at normal operating temp. & also good to reset
Idle air volume relearn to @ 650 rpm with a/c off & steering wheel straight.."
See less See more
The other way to find out is to do a dyno before and after the 2*, and maybe do a test of disconnecting the battery all night long and redyno it to see the outcome, I wish dynos were cheap though.
