I have a 2004 Nissan Titan 4x4 XE. It has a 2008 rear end from a pro 4x with the E locker. When i lock in the 4wd it seems to be dragging the rear tires, almost like the gear ratios are different  Has anyone had this problem or know if the gear ratios are different in the 2004 xe models and the 2008 pro 4x? I did not do the rear end swap so thats why i am confused on the issue. Any input would be much appreciated. Thank you.

If it's from a Pro4X, it's going to be a 3.36 gear, I bet. Check the tag. If you have a 2.94 front end, you'll drag the rear because the front is turning faster at the tire. I'm betting you have mismatched gears. I'm not entirely sure where the tag is on the front diff to tell the ratio, but maybe someone else can chime in. If you're mismatched, buy some 3.36 front gears, have them installed, and you'll be all set.

Ill climb under it and see what i see. I googled the specs on the 2004 stock rear end and from what i have read it should have been 3.36 also. BUT cant ever be certain until i look. Just wanted to know what to look for and find out exactly what is wrong. Don't want to go buying unnecessary stuff.

Not all 4x4 trucks are 3.36. You may have to jack up the truck on sturdy stands or put it on a frame lift, put it in 4x4, chalk the front tires and driveshaft, and rotate the shaft and count to see if it's just less than three or about 3 and a third turns of the shaft to get a single full rotation of the tires. Hopefully you can find a tag on the front diff.

You know what, though, if the ratios were different, it would bind even in 2wd because there's not a diff in the transfer case. I think you may have a locker problem. Does it bind only in turns or all the time when in 4wd?

You have some kind of rear diff issue. If it doesn't do it with the e-locker turned off, it's the locker.

But only in 4wd? That's nuts. Get it to a competent diff shop and have it checked out. No idea why it would fail in 4wd but not in 2wd.

I am having a similar issue after replacing the front differential in my '04 SE. The dealership told me it needed to be replaced because of constant slipping and oil bleeding from the breather and verified that it is a Big Tow model with a 3.357 gear ratio.

The differential I bought used from an '07 and they said it was the same gear ratio. The 4x4 engages no problem, I can feel the resistance. But when I turn, especially in reverse and at slow speeds, the rear tires chirp. I don't have any issues in 2 wheel drive.

I have tried realigning the front drive shaft in all four positions and that hasn't help.

Any ideas before I take the used differential back?

I had mismatched gears in my 4wd and it didn't bind in 2wd. No e-locker.
