The different sensors are because the 2007+ engines have variable valve timing. kind of like v-tech in our trucks. I'm not sure what you would need to do the swap, but that's probably what the timing differences would be. You might need to buy a wiring harness from a 07+ to get it to work.
2005 titan Swapping to a 2008 engine HELP!!
i have a 2005 titan that engine went bad.... i called 2 nissan dealers before buying a 2008 engine and they said it would work only that the computer needs to be reprogrammed. So i ordered the engine and my mechanic started to do the swap when he came to realize that there are sensors for the timming and stuff that dont match up... so he tryed to contact nissan dealer but they didnt help... if someone could please help me with this it would be great so i dont have to send this engine back and get a 2005-2006 engine..

They may have swapped some designations and made different items share the same wire. Like some cars, i think its older fords, have the windhield wipers go through the stereo wireing.

Nissan doesn't usually have "spare" circuits in the harness that can be re-arranged for different applications. The VVT of the 07's and up include a few other things too, off the top of my head, a current sensor that is attached to the battery cable, different cam sensors, VTC actuators. You'll need the correct harnessing and the correct ECU. Also, if the Titan is anything like my Maxima, when I put an Infiniti drivetrain in it I also had to have the correct keys that matched the ECU and NATS transceiver. I ended up buying an entire donor car for my swap, since the newer Nissans are so integrated, I needed the entire harness, ECU, PCM, NATS system, original keys, etc.

wow its going to take u forever to get the wiring done. what u should do is just swap the 05 engine heads and cams on the 08 engine and put her in without splicing any wires.

This thread is quite old but if he was actually able to make it work what you have to do is get a new not programmed ECU from Nissan for a 2007 (or find a company that is able to reset them) Then use the entire wiring harness on the engine. There is 100% no reason to remove the harness from the engine while removing so why anyone did and was trying to make the old wrong one fit the new engine is beyond my comprehension.I have the same problem you had with your truck, except mine is an 04 and the engine is 2010. The issue that comes in though is that Nissan may not be able to program the newer ECU to an older truck. The 07's share most of the exact same stuff as the 04-06 though so it's the best bet of making it work.

If you really want the 2010 engine, you'd be best served to have a 2007+ donor truck. GL finding a donor truck, most Titan's don't get totaled then resold because they are worth too much in scrap. Nearly 6000 pounds of steel gets good money!

I do have a question, last week I started looking for harness and ECU for 2010 model. couldn't get help because I didn't know three things, tow package, cruise control or vin #. I tried to explain my situation, but it didn't matter there's like 12 ECUs to pick from. Engine has low mile, bought out of town and can't return it and don't have any information of vehicle it came from. so why does it matter what package vehicle was equip with. What would you recommend.

It does not matter for the engine. The ECU is specific to the type of Titan chassis. For example, the 2WD and 4WD Titans have different WOT restrictions, among a bunch of other differences.I really appreciate the response. If we could know exactly what type of 2004 Titan, then we might be able to suggest a type of 2010 Titan that you could try to get the ECU from that would be mostly similar to your truck.
If it were me, I'd do like the Honda boys do. Use the FSM to research the differences between the 2004 and 2010 ECU harness. If most everything in the harness is the same, then just add a few wires to add the VTC, batt current sensor and whatever else is needed. With Honda's, those guys have figured out how to add just the necessary wires and change a few connectors to keep 90%+ of the original harness when upgrading/swapping to VTEC and/or newer motors.

I know this is an old thread but like many others, doesn't seem to have an end result. I did the same thing, Put a 2007 titan drive train in a 2004. Finishing up the wiring and noticed there wasn't a cam sensor to plug in on rear of motor. What I did was, Extended my sensor connection to the front of my new motor and plugged into the cam sensor on front of the motor. Last month I installed a 2008 titan VVT motor in my sons 2004 Titan, I extended the original camshaft sensor harness from the rear of the motor to the front of the motor and connected it to the cam sensor on the front of the motor (was on the rear of the 2004). Runs great but I'm guessing were missing out on that extra 10HP somewhere. He has been pulling a trailer with it an no problems. It doesn't throw a check engine code I'm guessing because the ECU isn't able to predict the future invention of the VVT (since it wasn't used then). Hope this helps someone.
