I have a 2005 titan 2wd and the truck will drive a short distance and then just completely stop pulling I can shut the truck off for about 5 minutes then restart it and it will drive again for about 1/2 mile and it will quit pulling again is this a tranny problem or maybe a sensor problem?

does it go above 2000 rpms when this is happening? any codes thrown?
Will it hit all 5 gears while you are able to drive it?

How many miles?
the truck has 49000 miles it shifts through all the gears at what ever rpm i want but then it just quits pulling instantly after about a minute or so
The first thing I would do would be check the battery and connections. A bad battery or connection can cause loss of power issues. However, it also could be an ECM relay problem. If so, then there wouldn't be any codes. Have you got the recent recall to replace the ECM relay yet? The original relay in the IPDM goes bad and cuts power to the ECM, and the truck loses power intermittently, and sometimes won't start. If you don't have the recall done, you should go get it fixed for free. But you could verify if the ECM relay is bad by swapping the ECM relay with the fog light or rear defrost relay in the IPDM. If this is indeed the cause of your trouble, then when you swap the relay out, the problem will go away and at least you can drive to the dealer and save yourself the tow fee. I wouldn't suggest driving around with your truck shutting down and losing power. A few people have blown their cats by loading them up with fuel due to ECM relay failure. Here's a diagram of the IPDM that shows the location of the ECM relay:

the truck will travel 1/4 mile or so the all power is lost to tranny only truck still runs great bu it acts like the truck is in neutral but i can shut the truck off for a few minutes (3) and the truck will drive 1/4 mile again but i have noticed a whining noise around the tranny today could it possibly be the torque converter going out?
Have you checked your fluid?

Sounds like the tranny is going into limp mode, did you check the fluid level? Exactly how mine felt when the transmission fluid coolant line burst and it went into limp mode...the engine will race, but the truck doesn't move...
fluid level seems to be right but the fluid looks to be very thin and i think i can smell a little hint of burn on the dipstick but that may just be my imagination since im frustrated at this point
pulled the transmission pan and just minimal metal shavings on the magnets and filter changed fluid and filter and nothing changed (same problem)
It's gotta be electrical.

Might try checking all the connectors to be sure they are tight.
