I recently lost my transmission on a long haul route from MD to TN. I had a local Nissan dealer perform a diagnostic check on my 06 titan and he recommended the entire transmission assembly be replaced with an OEM. He told me that the Titan transmissions computer needs to be matched to the VIN number of the truck for the CPUs to work properly. Does anyone knowthe details of what this enatails and if there are any less expensive alternatives such as buying a used tranny for the same year? I have found several used otions on the internet, but am reluctant to buy anything until I have a clear definition of what can or cannot be done.

Thanks

As I recall there is a thread here within the past 6 months where a forum member replaced the TCU himself and it did not require any reprogramming by the dealer.

Have you considered having your transmission rebuilt?

Yes I have talked with one transmission guy that rebuilds them. There was about a $500.00 delta between having a new OEM installed and rebuilding the current one. I have found one that is used for a lot less and trying to find out if the TCM can be reflashed? I have received several conflicting stories. One says you cannot reflash the used TCM the other says you can. Does anyone know anything different?

Before I'd plunk down bad cash for an OEM tranny... I'd talk to Level 10 in Hardyston NJ. Don't be fooled by imposters. They only have ONE shop... in NJ.

I did it.

I don't regret it.

Yeah thirds on level ten. My tranny was shot by 125k, slipping like a mother, clutch plates were beyond worn. I had a trans shop with close ties said that he couldn't find a certain pressure plate for a rebuild. Ended up having to get an updated one straight from Nissan. Supposedly all replacement transmissions from Nissan are actual "rebuilt." My tech was kind of surprise by that statement from the Nissan manager. When it was installed he said it looked brand new. After the install they drove it in with idiot mode to the Nissan shop to get it re flashed. The only warranty that came with the dealers trans was a 12k/1yr which I thought was effing ridiculous for a $4k trans. I didnt pay a dime for it (my boss at work bought it for an incentive bonus!!!!) but if I did i would feeerrrrr shuurrreee go with level10

IIRC, the Level 10 was the same price as the Nissan OEM replacement... or within a hundred bucks or so...

I had them do extra stuff like replace the broken transmission mount, new tranny coolant lines, and a few other smaller things. And if anyone has ever replaced the tranny coolant lines, you know what a PITA that is...

Well worth it. And it slams now! My maiden voyage, I even got better fuel mileage... On a lifted 4x4 CC with a movie theater in the back (see my mods), I got 25 MPG on the highway. Now, after the relearn, I get about 3 or 4 MPG better than I ever did with my local running. I would get 11 or 12... I get around 14-15 now. In these early 4x4s... that's unheard of!

Reflash and all support is included. I highly recommend them.

I put a used tranny in mine... I matched the year, drive (4w/2w) and tow (Big tow). I had it installed by a small local non-Nissan shop - and it did NOT require anything additional other than the tranny, flush kit, filter, and fluid.
