2006 Titan rear end 4x4 light duty / heavy duty

My truck came with a heavy duty rear end but due to price and availability I was forced to use a light duty rear end to get the truck back on the road. The problem I am now having is to get the 4 wheel drive to engage. The 4 wheel drive light just flashes. The heavy duty rear end had two plugs with two wires on each plug and the light duty rear end has no plugs. Please let me know if anyone has dealt with this same issue and how to fix this problem

Thanks

If by light or heavy duty you are referring to gear ratio, then you have a gear ratio problem (there was an upgraded axle for 2008+ models, but I’m not thinking that is what you are referring to).

There are two gear ratios used – 2.94 is standard, and 3.36 is in the “Big Tow” package, “Off-Road” and on later models, the Pro4X. So, I’m thinking you probably had 3.36 gears. There should be a sticker on the side of the differential that shows gear ratio, to be sure.

Long story short, the gear ratio in the front and rear differential must be the same. If you had 3.36 gears, and put in a 2.94 replacement rear end, you won’t be able to use 4WD, since the front diff has a 3.36 ratio. If I’m right about the ratios, don’t try 4WD – something will break.

The electrical connectors suggest you had an e-locker diff in the original rear axle. If you have a switch on the dash to lock the rear diff, that’s what you had. I’m not positive, but if you had an e-lock rear diff originally, no hook up may also cause a fault, but I don't think so. I suggest making sure the ratios match before worrying about that.

Good luck!

E lockers? I think they are all 3.36 gears.

I think what he is saying is he replaced the rear with a locker and 3.36 gears with a 2.96 rear. You will have to buy the gears to match for 4x4 to work in the front or find a new rear that matches the front.
need more info from the poster.

but it sounds like what ya`ll mentioned.

he replaced a E locker with a open rear with 2:94`s, that`s just 1/2 his worry.

having no E locker to complete the circuit.

maybe the ture trac guys can explain what they did to keep the 4wd operational.

we`re just assuming here at this point.

The gear ratios are the same in the rear and the front ends. The off road package has the e lockers and the one that I used to replace which is a four wheel drive (no off road package) does not have the connectors or e lockers. I am looking for any help on how I can make the 4 wheel drive functional. As it stands now I basically have a two wheel drive truck. Any help with this will be much appreciated

Thanks
