My 2010 Nissan titan has a noise(whine) that begans at 45mph and goes up to 72mph. Nissan will not replace the rear differential because the replacement part will have the same noise. They are avoiding the problem. Two 2010 Titans on the dealership lot have the same noise. They are telling me this a common problem with 2010 Titans.

Hmm. Must be a common problem in the 2004 as well. Mine is a whinny baby. I would take it to another dealer, you are still under warranty. Did they say what was actually causing the whine?

I personally wouldn't worry about It. My Navigator has a whine also, your going to get some noise regardless. Put a Magnaflow/ Flowmaster on it and that will take care of it.

thats weird because i dont have a whine at 45+....and anyone that has read any of my posts or knows me knows how OCD i am about noises. i have banks now so i def wouldnt be able to hear it. the only whine or whistle i have is coming from my transmission when it gets warm after driving for a while. figured it was normal since i have no tranny issues or fluid issues.

There should be no whine at 10,30,50, or 80+.

This is what mine sounds like.

I was doing some searching and it appears it may be the ring and pinion that is causing the noise. I also read that it does NOT mean impending DOOM...

Mine has a whine if throttle is OFF

Especially noticeable between 35-55 - I remove my foot from the gas and let it engine break, there is a very loud whine/grinding noise that reverberates through the drivetrain. I have not figured out what it is yet, I suspect failing rear differential (2006 with 84K) since it is so common but I haven't ruled out some other issue.

I have not found a good thread on "differential symptoms" that would tell me what a rear diff pending failure sounds or behaves like.

I am glad mine is not grinding. I am thinking about going with TruTrac eventually.

With the number of failures I am surprised there isn't an aftermarket ring and pinion option.

You can buy aftermarket R&P gear sets, but not in the OEM ratios. So you are looking at getting big tires to offset for the 4.10 or 4.56 gears, and of course to run big tires, you need new wheels, a lift, and you're gonna want some expensive coilovers, shocks and UCAs, and some traction bars, and probably gonna wanna some upgraded CVs when those come out. . . . .

And, since I have 4WD, I have to change the front gearing too. Kind of ridiculous.

I am going to pull the differential cover to see the damage, and I am flat scared to do so. If the axle gears are shot I am screwed. TrueTrac+PML Cover seems like a bargain comparatively.

Most likely the spider gears, not the ring and pinion gears

I have the exact same noise under the same conditions. The first time my friend rode with me he asked "What is that noise? It sounds like something in the transmission"
Being paranoid about all the rear-end failures I have inspected the rear gears(twice) and everything looks normal with no metal chunks/flaking.
I am almost thinking it is something with one of the U-joints on the rear driveshaft, I blew my front diff and will be replacing it, installing Bilstein struts and shocks, Brakes all the way around and also replacing all 4 U-joints. Going to be a busy Saturday! I will let you know if the noise goes away after changing the joints.
Picked up a new front diff today at Arlington Nissan in Illinois for $1,560 after tax, OUCH!!!
2004 with 120,000 miles and it still amazes me everytime I hit the gas pedal!

I have also inspected my gears and there is no metal shavings or flaking at all. I am curious to hear from you when you get all the U-joints replaced. The problem is bearable, but I would like it to go away. Keep us posted.....
