Hello,

I'm new to the forum and new to Nissan products as well. I just bought a 2011 Titan PRO-4X with 49,500 miles on it. It's in great shape and runs very smooth but I noticed a slight transmission shutter going into 2nd on a slow take off. Should I try the Dr. Tranny additive?

Thanks

I wouldn't put any additive in the tranny. maybe do a spill and fill. don't do a flush. click the link in my signature and start reading up

I'd also check the fluid very carefully for antifreeze as this is a known issue possible with these trucks. Could save your Trans if you catch it early.

Thanks. I'll take a look and do a drain and fill. What would cause antifreeze to get in there?
Failed radiator trans cooler.
Listen to Dubyam.
I would also check the coolant for signs of transmission fluid.

I have the same thing but only when it shifts early when I getting on it. I noticed it after Cajun and uprev. I figured I needed the line pressure mod.. IDK, but it's a good reason to sell the wife on Level 10..

After some research and talking to some engineers, the only compatible ATF fluids that will work that are available at the local parts store is Valvoline, Castrol, and Royal Purple. Any opinions on those? I know some have said they used Castrol and had no issues.

I'm liking the Valvoline Max life, it's cheap and smells delicious.

My lousy memory seems to be dragging up that Nissan Matic-s is made by Valvoline.

I've heard good things about Valvoline motor oil, but for diesel engines.

I'm quite sure Idemitsu makes it, but the Valvoline has worked well for me.

Why does he not want to 'flush' and just drain instead?? I've been researching for a cpl weeks now... as I thought I wanted to drain, then refill mine. But what I've come up with was I needed to do this: FWIW - I have an 06 LE

"You will need two people and several quarts of transmission fluid (Matic S, capacity is 11 quarts). While the truck is running, one guy will continuously pour transmission through a funnel into the transmission fill tube. The other guy will have the cooler line going out of the radiator, pouring this fluid into a catch (or bucket). The man aiming the cooler line will keep an eye on the fluid, once it looks clear with strong red tint, and without seeing any particles, he will then plug the line back in, telling the guy pouring the fluid to stop. He will then check the fluid level, adding small amounts until the fill line is reached. Fluid exchange complete, saving you a couple hundred bucks, and owing your buddy a few beers. "AMSOIL Universal ATF is the recommended fluid to replace Nissan Matic J fluid."

If you're getting shutter I think you should do the fluid exchange, I bet the crap that comes out will be a lot worst than you thought. I was amazed at what came out of mine. I did it last year by myself and the trans has shifted smooth as butter ever since. Here's my write up on it.

Note: you will be using a Matic S compatible fluid, My trans called for the older standard Matic J

I'd love to see someone try to pour it in as fast as it pumps out, because that ain't happening.
The best thing to do is have an actual fluid exchange done, using an actual exchange machine.
Otherwise, you can drop the pan to get almost 5 quarts out. That should be adequate, considering you'll be changing about 40 percent of it.

It's been a couple years since I did my full fluid exchange on mine, but I don't recall the fluid coming out very quickly.

You can keep up with it but really you don't need too. As long as the pan doesn't go dry you're fine. I did mine 3qts at a time.

You also wanna run more fluid through it than it takes to make sure to get all that burnt up fluid out. Way I see it doing a fluid change on your trans is really the only maintance you can do for a very expensive part of your truck. Might as well spend a few more bucks and take a little extra time to do it right. Honestly most people will only ever have to do it once the whole time they own the truck anyway.

Right. It's easy enough to do yourself, no need to make it into a science project. I did mine 2-3 quarts at a time also.
