Guys,

Good evening. Am new to the truck world, but after seeing RAM/Toyota/Ford, i finally planning to go with Titan. Am trying to find details about a 2013 Titan i saw today. Asking price is 25k CAD. Is this truck reliable and safe? what are the common issues you guys faced in this truck? The truck has remaining 1 year/8000 kms on warranty, so not much.

Please throw some lights

Steven,

Welcome to the contemplation of owning a Titan. Let me first start by saying that I have owned both Ford and Chevy pickups. I have contemplated Toyota and Dodge/RAM before purchasing my 2008 Titan.
A few things I will point out that I have noticed with my Titan that may or may not be a major selling point for you:
1. Check the alternator, mine needed to be replaced by fault of my own. But supposedly the 2007-2015 Titans are popular for needing new alternators after about 125,000 miles.
2. The rear end will most likely need to be rebuilt as you approach the 130,000-150,000 mile range. Don't worry, if you are mechanically savvy then this is an easy thing to accomplish while also allowing for you to re-gear your Titan at that point.

If you trailer then I advise upgrading to an extended tow mirror package. The stock mirrors on these Titans aren't the greatest when trailering over 8,000 lbs.
When it comes down to reliability and safety I can stand true to the fact that my Titan has never left me on the side of the highway or any road for that matter. And I am more than confident that if the average vehicle (not a semi truck) t-bones me at an intersection that my 6-year old will be more than safe in the backseat of it. Bare in mind that my recommendation comes from a 2008 model. Nissan has made a lot of improvements to their line of pickups since then.

Thanks for the answer bro.

This truck is in Canada and 2013 model and has 57405 miles.

1. how much will an alternator replacement costs?
2. What is rebuilt the rear end means? can you ellaborate?
3. How about engine, transmission etc.. I thought nissan is pretty reliable when it comes to this.
4. Do i really need extra waranty for 5k? is this worth it?

I have a 13 Pro-4x. I love it. More power and getup than any other 1/2 ton I've driven. Good and reliable to my present knowledge. I have 70K on mine and haven't had a issue yet. I would definitely recommend it and good luck with your purchase!

My apologies for the delayed response.

1. My alternator replacement cost me $170, I installed myself. It's a pretty straightforward replacement.
2. Rebuilding the rear-end means replacing bearings, gears, seals, housing, and fluid on the rear differential. --> Your current mileage won't call for it. And at this point, I'd recommend doing a differential fluid change. This will help reduce the potential need for a rebuild in the future. Maintenance is better than repairs.
3. Engine and transmission is solid. I've had NO issues and no indications of upcoming issues with my motor or my transmission. I MAY, and I stress MAY, contemplate doing a transmission fluid change since it's not terribly off its maintenance cycle. But I will have that done by the dealership.
4. It would be nice to have the added security if the price and mileage/coverage is decent. What type of extension are they offering for $5,000?

Well they are not telling me unless i sign the document and sit with them. It ranges from 3 to 6k depending upon what we want. But now am not sure, whether i should go with this truck. This is a 2013 Nisan Titan SV. Am more thinking about the resale value and gas mileage.

1. If am buying for 22k, how much can i sell it in 3 years time with a total of 140,000 km. any idea?
2. Also what is the gas mileage you guys are getting?

Thanks,

I wouldn't bother with an extended warranty that costs that much. My '07 has been quite reliable. My mixed driving MPG is 15.5.

The dealer offered me 11,500 for mine. All they did was quote exactly what Kelly Blue Book told them the trade-in should be. I even have the printout from KBB that they made.

1. What I've done in the states is go to KBB or Edmunds, and alter the mileage to get a range of what that vehicle would sell for today with the added miles. Then just factor about 2-3K off for the age.

2. As of right now I'm averaging the 21-24/mpg range. That's a combination of city/highway. Most of my driving is city. So I'm not doing too bad.

Nissan is there when it comes to reliability. Despite the Titan only being in it's 2nd Gen phase, Nissan has decades of engineering and manufacturing experience in the automotive industry. They may not be the "name of trucks" but take into consideration that Cummins, a longtime partner of Dodge, partnered with Nissan to roll out the first Nissan Diesel pickup. That's saying something, if anything at all.

If you're averaging 21-24 mpg mostly city in an '08 Titan I'll buy your truck right now.

Normal average in a stock first gen Titan is 13-15 city, 15-17 highway. I average 12-13 city, 15-16 highway if I'm not driving 80. The only thing you won't pass in a Titan is a gas station.

As to what to check for:

Start the truck and listen for a ticking sound from the engine bay. Can be possible exhaust manifold cracks that tend to crop up towards the 90k mile mark.

Crawl underneath and look at the rear axle, see if there's anything leaking and see if the axle vent (passenger side between differential and leaf springs) looks to be blocked or covered in dirt.

Rust underneath, especially right after the muffler on the exhaust. This joint tends to break or crack, leading to hot exhaust melting wires.

There's a thread on refreshing a first gen Titan that has a lot of other answers.

How is the resale value of the titan truck? any idea?
most Titan owners are cheaper than free lunch. maybe bc they are buying gas, who really knows, but to answer your question, yes the resale value absolutely BLOWS for anything Nissan... just the way it is... especially the Titan bc it has always been the ginger step child.

You are buying a used vehicle, so who gives a rip about resale as you are already saving money over the competition. It's the original owner that took the bath on resale.

When buying used, poor resale value is a good thing for the buyer.

My local Ontario Nissan wanted my 2012 PRO4X with 96,000km for $28,500CAD on a trade in for a new 2017 PRO4X. I've since change my mind as I've put to much work into my truck and it been paid off since 2015. I'll keep it now and finish modding her:)
