2015 Pro-4x won't stay in Park. Rolls away!

Drove to work today and when I went to park the shift lever would not go all the way into Park and the reverse camera stayed on. I fiddled with it and it felt like it went into Park but when I got out of the truck it started to roll forward (it was on a slight grade) and it was making a clicking sound. Fortunately there was no one else in the lot and I was able to get the door open and hop back in. Got it stopped but it would not start. Finally got it back into Park firmly and drove it around the parking lot a few times but each time I stopped I was unable to get it into Park again. Finally I ran through all the gears and it went into Park. That is how it sits now.

I bought this truck used a few months ago. Only 16k miles on it. Looks brand new. It is still under warranty (I think) so I know I need to take it to the dealer but wondering if anyone else has experience this or heard of it. No warning lights on.

As it is I consider this to be extremely dangerous because the level will go into the Park position and stay there but it is still not engaged fully.

Suggest you park the truck on an incline towards the dealership and see if they take the issue seriously.
They called yesterday afternoon and said the truck was fixed. They will install the new radio/nav head unit this a.m. I asked my wife to get as much documentation as possible on what was wrong and what was fixed since this is the third time they've worked on it. I had them check to see if it had had any Nissan service records prior to this and they said it did not.

I'll be glad to get it back but have to say my confidence in this truck is shaken. I feel like I will need to be very cautious about this issue for a while.

Will report back if any persisting issues.

Anyone want to be a like-new 2015 Pro-4X?
Got the truck back. Seems to be working properly so far. The replacement radio still has not come in so the work order is still open so I do not have the paperwork in regard to what was fixed/replaced. My wife said they mentioned a 'valve' or something. Possibly the valve body??

Anyway, once the radio is replaced I'll have the paperwork and post back here what the repair was.
Did the problem show up again? What parts were replaced exactly?

So far so good. No issues. Still don't know what repairs were made or parts were replaced because they still haven't got the radio in yet so the work order is not complete. We've been waiting for the radio for over 2 weeks.
Problem showed up again last night. Went out to eat. Truck wouldn't start when we got ready to leave. Turn ignition to on, apply brakes and then run down through the gears and back up into Park and then it would start. When we got home it would not firmly go into Park and the pawl would not engage. Had to run through the gears several times to get it to engage. Exact same as before. Got video again. Back to Nissan tomorrow for the 4th time. They had it a week last time.
Sounds like a pretty good theft prevention feature to me. :D Except for the rolling away part. :(

If they keep it long enough will you qualify for the lemon law?
I don't know. Starting to wonder if I need to contact Nissan myself. I'm sure that's about like getting in to see the Wizard of Oz.

I'm going to give the dealership one more chance.

The hard question is should I sell it as soon as I get it back or should I give it a while to see if the problem is actually solved. As of now they are 0 for 3. I'd prefer to sell it with a clear-ish conscience.

Maybe they'll give me a good deal on a new one but I have to say I think the new ones are butt ugly.

Damn that sucks man. I was hoping you'd be satisfied now, but to be honest, I'd kick this one to the curb and get something else. I agree the new titans are unique looking and needlessly too big, but that's just me. When you can, let us know what didn't fix it last time. Maybe whatever was replaced is failing prematurely from something else?

If they can come back with a definitive answer on what EXACTLY has failed then I see no reason to get rid of it. The problem is they just start throwing parts at it without actually testing the parts that were pulled out. So it can be hard to say which part was the problem.

I've read a couple threads on the lemon law process and it sounds like the dealer is on the hotseat if they can't fix it. The manufacturer has a tendency to get real pissed off at dealers that can't fix problems that lead to a lemon law buyback.

Yes, the newer ones aren't as good looking as the Gen I Titans.

I agree, but they are 0 for 3 right now, so I'm not real confident that they actually know exactly what failed or have the capability to figure it out. I think vehicles have gotten more complicated than the ability of service centers to fix them. Every time we take it in they seem completely baffled. And each time they say it is fixed, the same problem crops back up within days.

Like I say, I have no idea what they have done so far. I only know that they told my wife that they were going to 'talk to Nissan' about it.

I'm not sure what protections I will have since I bought it used, in another state, from a Chevy dealership. I did not buy it from the local Nissan dealership that is stuck with it now because it is under warranty.

I'm going to talk to an attorney since this is such a serious safety issue. Possibly get him to write Nissan about the issue. That is probably the only thing we have going in our favor: this is a vehicle still under warranty with a potentially lethal drive train flaw that Nissan has failed to fix three times. This could be an expensive liability issue for them if they don't come through with this.

My wife will take it back in today. She is going to sit down with them and find out what the next step is. She is going to try to impress on them how dangerous this vehicle still is. I'm trying to convince her that we need to sell it ASAP but she really likes it. I do too if we can get this fixed.

My wife dropped it off. They gave her a loaner without question. She asked them if we needed to get in contact with Nissan and they said no, that they would handle it.

She asked them for a bill for what had been done so far and they said they could not print it out since the job was not complete. (???) They gave her a copy of the mechanic's description which is mostly gibberish:

"replaced shifter" then "also cable was broken to shifter so replaced it to".

Next trip: "tcm check continuity between range switch and tcm connector all term has continuity procedure states replace" then "replaced valve control assembly"
The dealership has talked with Nissan who has recommended replacing the whole transmission which they are going to do this week. So two things seem clear to me: 1) they are throwing parts at the problem and 2) they don't know what the problem is. I sure am hoping this will do the trick.

No offense to any Nissan mechanics on here, but don't you think the mechs working on "problem" vehicles like yours would utilize all resources like forums for guidance and ideas for things to check? I'm just saying, its all public on the net, some of these ideas "valve control assy" had been mentioned. I hope the new trans works...although I have my doubts.

If the problem is electronic and outside the transmission you just got a free transmission!

No, I would not expect that. The mechanics are busy, busy, busy. The service writer on the other hand might be looking stuff up outside the Nissan domain.
The fact it will not start without running the shifter through the gears tells me it is a linkage problem.

I agree. Or a position sensor of some sort. However, at times when you go to shift it into Park it does not want to go all the way in. The shift lever will go into the slot but it does not snap into place and the dash indicator shows it not in any gear at all. Whether that is a linkage issue or a transmission issue I could not say but it seems that either way there is more to it than that. Not sure why replacing the whole tranny would solve this but apparently that is what Nissan has told them to do.

[soap box] I hate automatic transmissions and do not understand them. All of my cars are manuals. I understand manuals. I wish someone made a full size pick up with a robust 6 speed manual. I'd pay extra for that. Sadly, there are very few trucks or cars with a stick anymore. Double clutch/paddle shift transmissions are fine with me but they are super complex and usually available only in pretty expensive cars.[/soap box]
I believe dodge heavy duty line offer said manual transmissions still but they are hard to find and come as base models usually...I also prefer a manual, the silverado I had before my first titan was a manual...so much fun to drive...gave me something to do also
Got it back Thursday. Tranny replaced. Drove it all weekend, no problems yet. But been here twice so far.
