Hi eveyone, new to the Forum.

I'm going to be trading in my 2010 Tacoma DCLB TRD Sport soon and deciding whether I should go with the 2017 Titan XD Gas Pro-4X or the Half-Ton Titan Pro-4X. I've been researching everything I can on both trucks and have test drove the half-ton, which was the best riding truck I've been in. I'm still not sure which one to go with and was wondering if I could get your all's opinions.

My taco I have now has a 6ft bed and I gotta say I love having a long bed and if the half-ton Titan had a 6ft or even the 6.5ft bed that would be the one I would go with. The only thing I really haul is my motorcycle which I put in the back of my bed now and a 10ft Kayak. With the XD my thinking is that it would be nice to have that extra bed length to not worry about my motorcycle not fitting and also my kayak not sitting out half way but is it worth it? If I went with the half-ton would I notice a difference from my 6ft bed I have now from my Taco going to a 5.5ft bed?

Also what is the difference in the MPG compared to the XD Gas and the Half-Ton? I know the XD weighs more but not sure how much of an impact that has on MPG compared to the half-ton. I know the XD doesn't have to provide any EPA due to the weight but was wondering what other owners have averaged.

Lastly I have a question on steering. The XD has the Recirculating ball and the half-ton a rack and pinion steering. Is it that much difference and which is better? From what I've researched is that a recirculating ball has trouble staying center and the rack and pinon can be dead center. Would the recirculating ball have trouble getting out of alignment easily?

Both trucks look very beautiful and Nissan did a very good job on these trucks and cannot wait to get my Titan. One thing, which can be an easy fix, is that the XD tires look extremely small (LT275/65R18) on the truck compared to the half-ton (P275/70R18). I'm leaning towards the XD just because of the length of the bed and if I ever need to haul something I know I a legit truck to do the job but not sure if I need that big of a truck for a commuter.

Thank you for reading and hope I can hear what you all think!

Personally if I had to choose between the two, it would be the XD. Foremost, like you mentioned the added bed length. Secondly, the slight towing advantage. The MPG's would be minimal at best.

Had a Tacoma 4X4 but then bought the half-ton Titan in 2004. Was plenty big enough towing around a 6000 lb wakeboard boat plus many other things over 13 years. Ended up with 190k on it. Decided to get another Titan. Drove both the XD and the non-XD and ended up buying a 2017 Titan Platinum Reserve (non-XD). It drives amazing...feels bigger than my old Titan half-ton. Has plenty of horsepower. The XD just felt too big.

Personally both rigs are sweet. Heard a few more issues on this board with the XD Diesel it seems but with it being a new line for Titan it is expected. I think you'll be happy with either.

You should ask yourself a few questions like:
Do I want a truck that weighs about 700 pounds more than the non XD, and has a turning diameter of 54 feet and recirculation ball steering? Then I should get an XD. Do I want to tow a heavy trailer often? Then an XD is still the choice.
Do I need the bigger brakes and the more heavy duty frame? Then get the XD. Do I need tow a gooseneck trailer? XD again. Will the GVWR and CGVWR numbers meet my needs?

Do I want a faster truck that weighs about 700 pounds less than the XD, and has a turning diameter of 48 feet with Rack and Pinion steering? Do I tow under 9000lbs? Do I tow over mountains a lot? Something to consider.
Do I want a little better mpg? Then the non-XD is a better choice.
Will the smaller truck still meet the GVWR and GVCWR numbers that you require?

I personally would choose the non-XD at this time for my needs. My nephew just bought an XD SV gas model. It is too long for me, and lacks the maneuverability that I like while offroad. I don't need the extra cab space, so I would choose a King Cab model if I were buying now. (my current 1st generation Titan is a King Cab).
Also, the rumor that the Titan will receive a Warrior style upgrade, just makes me want to wait longer before I make a purchase decision. Plus, GM is going to debut a new Silverado at around the same time. I expect it to have the new 10 speed automatic in it, and it's anyone's guess what engines it will have. Ford (never been my favorite brand), has some new trucks that are coming to the market. RAM has a Power Wagon that is on my list.
Lots of choices in the near future. 99% of my driving right now is just commuting and going to Home Depot :), but that could change.

I suggest that you make a list of your wants and needs. Give them each a number from 1-10 as to how important they are to your decision. Add them up and then go drive both vehicles to see which one feels best.
Then YOU make the choice, not this forum. Let us all know what you get, and why you made that choice.

Nissan will end production of the XD. Bad investment and they realize it. The regular Titan on the other hand is a good truck and meets the needs for most people.
Nissan has a lot of $$$ and R&D into the XD to stop production so soon, especially the diesel. It's also a similar carryover from their NV cargo vans which actually do sell.

Thank you all for the feedback! Very good stuff to think about! I'm kinda torn between the two. I've been needing to make a list of the pro's and con's and what I like and don't like about them. I'm going to go one weekend and test drive the XD and then make my decision.

I'm really hoping that they come out with the Titan Warrior! But they would have to be competitive in pricing to the Raptor which starts at $50,000. But if your going in debt and making a payment on a truck that would be the one I would be happy to go into debt.

Has Nissan almost fixed all of the bugs out of both trucks for 2017?

I'm not sure about Nissan x'ing the XD yet. I would think they would give it a couple more years to see if it's worth it. They are digging into a market they have never been in before so it will take some time to get people to stray away from Ford, Dodge, and Chevy. I say by 2020 they will decide if it's worth it. But who knows lol

I'm in the same boat. My previous (other than an mid-90's Taco) was a 2014 Tundra double cab. I sold it because it was under-featured and the DC space for passengers sucked according to my wife. Plus, no real need at the time. Bought a Yukon Denali with the 6.2 and now I need a big, powerful engine in whatever I buy. I would get a Sierra w/6.2 in a heart beat but GM has so many vibration issues that I just can't take a chance, too scared I'll get a lemon. My choices are down to a used 2014+ Tundra or, Titan half ton or XD gas. I need the cabin space but not sure if I can live with the shorty bed.

At the local stealership there was an XD parked next to a non-XD with both cabs lining up. That gave me a good side view of the bed differences which seemed less than a foot. If you can, find these two parked next to each other and do that. Look at them from behind too. Honestly there isn't THAT much difference in size but there is some, so decide if you can live with that.

I'm still unsure what to do. A half ton with a long bed would be perfect but Nissan or Toyota do not make that.

Good luck and keep us posted!

The XD is an experiment that was designed to test the market with the non XD being the truck they would focus the most in terms of sales.
no the XD is for a niche market, they are trying to target a certain group. The diesel is an even narrower area. But yes, bulk of sales is supposed to come from regular titan and single cab fleet trucks.

Thanks man, I've been trying to google pictures of both trucks side by side but haven't seen much. I'll have to go to the dealership and see if they have some side by side. Good luck on your search too! I saw that Toyota is coming out with a TRD sport for the Tundra in 2018 but no redesign yet for that truck.

For the half-ton people what has been your mpg around the city and highway?

Same here, just went from a PreRunner Taco to the new base model Titan CC and it is amazing ! Much better so far than my old 09 XD KC and besides parking everything better than the Taco !

Been thinking it for a while and I'm going to go with the half-ton just because I won't be using the XD to it's full potential of what they made it to do. The half-ton will work with what I'm wanting to do. Now I'm wondering if I should wait for the 2018's and let them get all the kinks out of the 2017's or go ahead and get the 2017?

Honestly unless you tow alot the XD isnt worth it over the half ton. hell i towed some crazy weight in my gen 1 and this new titan would slay my old one. if you go camping every weekend or use it for work trailers etc then get the XD. Not sure there are many "kinks" to work out. besides some tranny shifting hickups some people report. the engine and transmission combo has been used for a few years on other vehicles. and the suspension is basically the same as the Gen 1. If you can get a good price on the half ton i say get it.

Ah ok that's good to know. I've been reading about those trans issues, hopefully they will have a reflash update on them soon like the XD's did.

I've been getting the Taco ready for trade in, put back on the stock wheels, going to clean her for one last time and clean the inside. Going to miss it but I know I'm going to love the Titan. Going to test drive a grey pro-4x tomorrow, I'm leaning toward the deep blue pearl so I might just end up seeing if the dealer can find one. Wish me luck and thank you all for you input!

This is my Taco but with the aftermarket rims. Hopefully get a good trade in value for it
