2021 What gas are you running?

I just bought a 2021 Titan earlier this month. Manual says premium gas recommended for best performance. Has anyone seen a diff when running 89 or 87? Gas mileage any better or worse, spark knock or poorer performance.

This has been a topic recently so while you are waiting for replies, search for something premium gas and you should find a number of threads

Couple local stations have 93 octane no ethanol fuel so that's what I run in every thing. Truck, bike, lawn equipment. (Well ok the tractor gets off-road diesel) Don't feel any more power one way or another but there is a bit of a bump in fuel economy. Though that could have more to do with the no ethanol than the 93 octane part.

I've gone back and forth and from what I have found is gas mileage does see a slight improvement on premium. With this slight mpg improvement (roughly 1 mpg) the cost difference (in my area) is like $6-$7 extra for a tank. With the amount I fill up monthly, it's like $26 more a month to run premium. Kind of in the eye of the beholder if it's worth it or not. For me I'll just stick with premium until the price difference between the two gets obnoxious.

Thanks for the chuckle SeanDavy! Think someone drank some bong water!

I've tried every grade of gas! My new Titan is averaging 13.2 and had it back to Nissan four times. Three times at the original selling dealership and this time at another! Yesterday I was told Nissan is sending a rep and technician to look at it. Playing the waiting game now! Will post back at a later date.....

I tried 87, 89, 94 and 105 octane racing fuel! Nothing increased my mileage, but the race fuel did seem like it gave the truck a little more pep. Also my buggy is in the shop! My tranny shifts funny. The dealership looking at it said it feels like it's stuck in tow mode. Hopefully, when it's fixed the mileage improves!

Same here, given how much cheaper Costco fuel runs, it's easier to give the Titan Premium. On rare occasions, I'll give it Shell premium. Given how many people have posted issues about Knock on the 5.6, I don't want to risk anything (even if the knocking reported isn't related).

If the OP's next thread is about running full synthetic or conventional oil, we'll know that he's just trolling us.... :p

Are we not lucky we get to choose the grade of fuel we use in our vehicles. I used to own two 1994 Nissan Altima SE's once upon a time. One (the 5-speed) got totaled in late 2012 at 200K miles and one (the auto) was donated to a tech school in 2017, at @200K miles. Both cars got premium fuel. I still remember a huge disagreement on the Altima forums years ago as folks were adamant that premium made no difference on the KA24DE motor. I still have a HC of the Altima service manual, and have attached a couple of hot of the press images. Of course, my 18 P4X has no such statement in the owners manual; I don't have the service manual. Someone did mention that the 20 and beyond's do.....

I can't remember which of my appliances tell me that E10 is the highest form of Ethanol that can be used. I believe it's my pressure washer. I'm of the thought that if something is engineered to run under certain environments, I try to run to those specifications if possible. If not, then I figure that I probably need to use a different product. When I had my GTO and premium gas prices went above $4.00 a gallon, I was commuting to some client sites that were over 60 miles away. It wasn't prudent for me to own the GTO, so I had to give it up. This was just after the crash of '08, so I had to downgrade to a very anemic Kia Forte. Going from a 400+ HP vehicle that managed only 17 MPG on a good day to a turd of a vehicle that had less than 160 HP but managed at least 29 MPG was a bitter pill to swallow, but sometimes making sure that you can afford your lifestyle is the decision that not everyone can make. If I get to the point where I can't afford premium, then I'll have to decide if the Titan or my SS are vehicles that I should own. I don't want to be that guy that drives a high end performance car and puts the cheapest fuel in because he's "car poor".

Current Manual basicaly states the same :
FUEL RECOMMENDATION NISSAN recommends the use of unleaded premium gasoline with an octane rating of at least 91 AKI (Anti-Knock Index) number (Research octane number 96). If unleaded premium gasoline is not available, you may use unleaded regular gasoline with an octane rating of at least 87 AKI number (Research octane number 91), but you may notice a decrease in performance. CAUTION • Using a fuel other than that specified could adversely affect the emission control system, and may also affect the warranty coverage. • Under no circumstances should a leaded gasoline be used, because this will damage the three-way catalyst

So 91 is recomended, 87 in okay but leadead is a no-no....

Premium fuels usually burn cleaner! Too much ethanol in lawn equipment screws them up. So I just buy the best fuel I can get to keep my stuff running right. What's an extra six bucks per fill up on my Titan. I know I've been complaining about 13.2 mpg on this vehicle, but that's under Nissan's spec's. Plus the transmission seems lazy. Almost like it searching for the right gear and sometimes the downshift is brutal. I'm just glad this tech at Nissan said, "that ain't right!"

Heard all sorts of perspectives on premium gas. Never use it. Always use it. Use it every other tank. Don't use it, but use fuel additives. Was told by a mechanic once if I wanted to keep bringing it in to clean the fuel injectors, keep using it. I'm primarily 87. 93 when I feel like balling. Never really noticed a difference either way. I do stay away from the sketchy gas stations though. There was one by the house would make my check engine light come on. Like clock work. Started getting just enough to make it to a better station, but when the miles to empty is 3, and it's 18 miles to the next one. Not much choice there.

Mines a 2020 but 2016+ Titans (where this thread lives) have yet to be offered in a Flex Fuel configuration.
You had me wondering for a minute though! I never looked at the first gens so I wasn't aware of the FFV history, looks like it became available in 2005 & ended in 2015. I'd have looked for that option if it was available just so I had the option to run e85 if I was every caught traveling during a fuel shortage event otherwise I remain unimpressed with vegetables in my gassers tank, neat as heck in the diesels though!
