2wd vs 4wd

So I'm really really debating on what to do...

I have a 05 Dakota that I am damn near 10k upside down on :(

I was going to just trade it in on a 05 Titan and take the hit...but I can't roll that over on a used vehicle...

So I went to the dealership today to look for an 08 SE in 4x4 so I can use the 5k rebate and only roll over 5k to the Titan....

They had no 08s in 4wd... they had a 08.5 in 4wd but they only have 3,000 rebates and a $36,000 price tag..so I'd end up paying $43,000...

Definitely not in the cards.

He told me they are trying to move some of the 2wd 08s though and can offer up to a 10k rebate on those..

I really can't see going to a 2wd truck but.... it's very tempting to jump into a NEW Titan (20000000x better than my Dakota) and not be rolling ANYTHING over....

Do they making locking rear diffs for them?

I do like to go sling some mud from time to time... think a 2wd w/ some tires would keep me happy?

Decisions.. decisions....

(All I know is I test drove a 08.5 Titan tonight and I fell in love)

F*ck Dodge.

Well you are on your way to the best truck on the road.

I have a 4x2 and love it, better gas millage than the 4x4, less to break, BUT if you need a 4x4 you would probably regret settling for a 4x2 and YES they make a Tru Track for the 4x2 search around here and you will find many posts on it, apparently it's the ba**ls I wish I had the extra cha ching for one myself..... on the other hand it gets you out of the Dodge, up to you...

Good Luck, welcome and enjoy your new Titan !!! :)
If you dont live in a snowy climate, I don't see why you would need a 4x4.

I like to play in the mud... lol

I think the 2wd with tru-trac and some decent tires though would keep me happy.

I just can't get over how bad *** the Titan is compared to my Dakota...

I guess if I wanna get crazy in the mud-riding and what not I could always get a beater old Toyota or something....

Thanks for your replies guys...

If you really want a 4wd, you will probably regret getting a 2wd. But like you said you can always pick up a beater 4wd to play in the mud. And you don't have to live in a place that snows to NEED a 4wd. You wouldn't want to live where I live without a 4wd, and it barely ever snows here. Even if it does it only lasts a few hours.
 Yeah helo... You should link your "stuck in the mud" thread when you respond to threads like this!

I have to agree with helo on this one. If you pick up a 4x2, just get yourself an old Jeep or Ranger to mud with. You won't have to worry about damaging a $30000 brand new truck while you are having fun, either.
MEANING NO DISRESPECT TO ANY ONE. REMEMBER I"M CANADIAN WHERE WE OCCASSIONALLY HAVE SNOW..

my 2 cents...why buy a truck if it's not 4x4?

If your in a state or country and you are just towing...i can see it..but up here, 4x4 button should be standard....and if i wanna go off road i don't have to contemplate it!

It is my avitar now.

I don't worry to much about damaging my truck. I used to worry about it, but now I just use it like it is meant to be used. If it breaks, I will wash it real good and bring it back to the dealer and tell them to fix it. My dealer doesn't give me any trouble with warranty work. After buying 4 nissans through the same dealer in the last 10 years they want my return business. Just have fun with it and worry about that kind of crap after it breaks. There is no reason in my mind to buy a 4wd, and not use it. If you don't ever get it stuck, then you aren't trying hard enough.

Ditto on the no disrespect thing.. but you're CANADIAN!!!!

J/K.... Apples and oranges, CDN... You're considerably more Northerly and snow is a fact of life for you. Not the case in all Earthly latitudes. Down South, it's mud or swamp to play in, not snowdrifts.

The basic fact still remains, a 4x2 will get better fuel mileage, have no front differential issues, and for most, serve the purpose of having a truck. 4x4 is more of a toy/luxury to those who need/want it.

Personally, I love my 4x4, but it's not necessarily for everyone. That's all.
I was in the same spot you were in a couple months ago. I really, really wanted a 4x4. But after weighing the increased cost and the % of time I would actually use a 4x4 ....made my decision that much easier.

Why would you want to go beat up a brand new Titan 4x4 in the mud? Especially if you're going to be buried in it for a while?(compliments of the Dakota)....Go get a beater for the mudd'in fun, get the spank'in new 4x2 Titan for everyday. Take advantage of that huge rebate opportunity.

You've definitely narrowed down your search to the best....MAN this truck is sooooo much fun. I keep telling my wife, it's like having a the muscle car I've always wanted, but with a bed!
Haha.. well I got the go fast car (signature in my first post)

Thanks for the input guys....

I might go scope out what 2wds they have... if I am getting a 2wd I atleast want some nice options on it :D

HAHAHAHAHA! Too Kwel to hear the nice weather states opinion, and i get that !!]

Born and raised here i'm afraid. So i can't apologize for my location..i'm proud of it ..jus so ya know. :gunz:
I can't deal with the snow that much.. LOL

I just moved to Mississippi from Fairbanks Alaska... and I have to say I love the change. It's 75 here today... it was -40 in Fairbanks today.

I'm going shopping tomorrow... I'll report back with my findings... lol
Get the 2wd....lift the crap out of it.....no one will be the wiser.....

I wanted to lift the Titan I buy...but I am not sure I will do it if I get a 2wd....
Why not? Just as many lift and suspension goodies for 2WD as there is for 4WD.... Nuttin wrong with a lifted 2WD..... :dunno:

Wouldn't it be even easier to see that it's not a 4x4 by having it lifted ??? :smoke:
Question:

So if I get a 2wd I know for a fact I want a limited slip or something.. I see the tru-track from Detroit all over the site and it's praised... when I was building my Titan on the website it has a trac package option...

Trac Package
# 2-wheel Limited Slip (ABLS)

Is this junk? Should I just leave it off and go with a Detroit tru-track?
