MINOCQUA, Wis. - Dozens of drivers made a mad rush for cheap gas after a station employee accidentally changed the price to 33 cents a gallon.

An employee closing Trig's Minocqua Shell for the night meant to drop the price of gas by 1 cent, but mistakenly dropped a nine from the $3.299 a gallon in the computer, making the price of gas 32.9 cents Monday night.

He left about 10 p.m., but drivers could still use their credit cards to buy gas.

Word of the bargain spread fast in the rural northern Wisconsin community, with 42 people buying 586 gallons of gas in an hour and 45 minutes. One person had pumped 27 gallons and two purchased 18 gallons.

Local police saw the horde at the station and called store manager Andrea Reuland, who went to the station and pushed the emergency stop.

"There were cars two deep at each of my pumps," said Reuland, who knew many of the drivers and told them they were being dishonest — the main store sign had the correct price.

"I was very upset that there's that many dishonest people," she said. "They knew there was a problem, and they took advantage of an employee's mistake and I think that's terrible."

The employee, who has been there for about six months, had changed the gas prices 25 times in the past six months.

"It was an honest mistake," Reuland said. "I could have done it."

Area residents were still talking about it Friday morning.

"Was it you guys?" a woman in the station asked Reuland. "Why do I always miss the good stuff?"

What a steal - literally. Someone should have told them.

Not that I wouldn't have been there with a large tanker... I just saying! :)

wow, like that gas station isn't raping people out of their money at 3.29/gal...
people aren't being dishonest by buying the cheaper gas....and who cares if they knew the price on the billboard was right, there's nothing they could do about it if the price was wrong in the computer....they just got lucky that night that's all....i'm angry at that manager for being upset over losing out on about $1800 worth of sales for the night, i'm sure that didn't make THAT big of an impact on the gas station...if it's that small of a coummunity, i would boycott the station after hearing her say that i was being 'dishonest' and 'taking advantage of an employee's mistake', the gas station is 'taking advantage of the fact that people have to buy gas' they know that they can make the price whatever they want and people have to buy it no matter what....that manager is and idiot....she means to tell us that if she was in the customer's shoes, she wouldn't have done the same exact thing they did??? BULLSH!T......:futwice:

Thats when you need a 50 gallon drum and filler her up. It's not being dishonest, it's being taking advantage of an opturnity. Dang wish I could of got on that action. I think it's should be a small reward for living in po dunk wiconsin. Maybe all the stations could take turns for one hour each night. It would be like playing the lottery.
I've been to that station many times. Minocqua and adjoining Woodruff is just under 10,000 people. It was wrong of people to take advantage, it is morally wrong. Everyone knew the price wasn't realistic, and knew it was a mistake. The right thing to do would be to notify the owner of the problem, especially if you know them well. It bothers me to see people justify their actions, knowing full well that they are capitalizing on a honest mistake.

I agree with you.
The moral thing to have done is gone there with a tanker trailer and sucked all the gas so that all these dishonest people wouldn't "steal" from the poor gas station.

(notice i didn't say anything about returning the fuel i sucked)

(Most) gas stations, in particular independents and franchises, live on a razor thin margin when it comes to gas. That's why they all sell Cheetohs and assorted crap with higher margins. In terms of gas alone, one or two guys running out with a full tank of gas could pretty much wipe out a gas station's profits made on gas. Let alone 500+ gallons.

I certainly have the same disdain for big oil, and if I could stick a needle in a bloated BP exec and get some oil out of him, I'd be first in line. But on the retail end, I feel pretty bad for the station owner.
Yea the gas station really doesnt make that much money on gas believe it or not. My dad owns one and we make something like 4 cents a gallon. The rest goes to Houma oil who we have a contract with to sell it for them.
Local news station did an investigation on gas pumps about two week ago and found some that were cheating people as much as 16oz. per gallon in the Mid-Tenn. area...:boxing:

I would gladly take their loss as my gain.....

They will survive it .....
as said above. they are not being honest charging us 3.29 a gallon. now its our turn
