So I drove 140 miles to my storage unit today to pick something up and store some other stuff in it.
The roads out there are icy and snowy. Earlier this year during the summer I had trouble with getting my rear diff to lock on some jeep trails so given the slipper road surfaces and weather conditions I figured "hey, perfect time to try to engage the locking rear diff to test if it is working or not" Bad idea. I ended up getting stranded 140 miles from home.
Here's what happened.
I was parked infront of my storage unit on the snowy icy parking lot and decided to put it in 4h, 4 h works fine. Great. So I put it into 4 low. $ lo worked. I toggle my locking rear diff switch while in N, diff lock light just blinks at me then goes off, doesn't engage. So I drive forward very slowly with switch for diff lock still on, doesn't engage, so I put in N then put into R and drive backwards a little bit. Still wouldn't engage. So I go to N, then to Drive, and push on the gas and I hear a loud pop sound. That's not good. I put it in neutral and switch it from 4 lo to 2wd, it stays stuck in 4 lo. I creep crawl it to a friends mechanic shop 1/4 mile away and ahve him get in and see what it's doing. He toggles the switch a couple times and gets it so the computer says it's in 2wd, drives it forward and it makes a noise under the truck while moving slowly, he goes to turn it and can hear it pop going around the corner, he tells me the transfer case isn't disengaging but the computer says it's disengaged. He recommends I take it to one of the other two shops in town since he doesn't deal with 4wd vehicles so I take it to grainland where another friend of mine works. On the way there creeping another 1/4 mile to that place when I try to brake the brakes get super spongy and i have trouble stopping, i try to turn into parking lot and struggle to turn the wheel. I get it parked and to a stop, almost running into another vehicle but am saved by the ebrake. I turn it off and go talk to my friend and he coems over, starts it up, brake pressure returns, and steering is working fine, he toggles the 4wd switch and 4wd still won't disengage, he tells me he can't get to it until monday next week. I tell him i have warranty, he tells me they don't do warranty repairs. So I called my insurance and am having it towed 140 miles ona flatbed tomorrow morning to my dealership where I have extended warranty, luckily insurance is covering all of the tow except for $80.00 I hope my warranty covers this. My truck just turned 79,300 miles today and it's a 2008.5 Pro-4x with the no fear package. If warranty doesn't cover it I'm just trading it in on the spot for a small fuel efficient car, this truck has been nothing but problems since I got it and i'm tired of dumping money into it.
