So I drove 140 miles to my storage unit today to pick something up and store some other stuff in it.

The roads out there are icy and snowy. Earlier this year during the summer I had trouble with getting my rear diff to lock on some jeep trails so given the slipper road surfaces and weather conditions I figured "hey, perfect time to try to engage the locking rear diff to test if it is working or not" Bad idea. I ended up getting stranded 140 miles from home.

Here's what happened.

I was parked infront of my storage unit on the snowy icy parking lot and decided to put it in 4h, 4 h works fine. Great. So I put it into 4 low. $ lo worked. I toggle my locking rear diff switch while in N, diff lock light just blinks at me then goes off, doesn't engage. So I drive forward very slowly with switch for diff lock still on, doesn't engage, so I put in N then put into R and drive backwards a little bit. Still wouldn't engage. So I go to N, then to Drive, and push on the gas and I hear a loud pop sound. That's not good. I put it in neutral and switch it from 4 lo to 2wd, it stays stuck in 4 lo. I creep crawl it to a friends mechanic shop 1/4 mile away and ahve him get in and see what it's doing. He toggles the switch a couple times and gets it so the computer says it's in 2wd, drives it forward and it makes a noise under the truck while moving slowly, he goes to turn it and can hear it pop going around the corner, he tells me the transfer case isn't disengaging but the computer says it's disengaged. He recommends I take it to one of the other two shops in town since he doesn't deal with 4wd vehicles so I take it to grainland where another friend of mine works. On the way there creeping another 1/4 mile to that place when I try to brake the brakes get super spongy and i have trouble stopping, i try to turn into parking lot and struggle to turn the wheel. I get it parked and to a stop, almost running into another vehicle but am saved by the ebrake. I turn it off and go talk to my friend and he coems over, starts it up, brake pressure returns, and steering is working fine, he toggles the 4wd switch and 4wd still won't disengage, he tells me he can't get to it until monday next week. I tell him i have warranty, he tells me they don't do warranty repairs. So I called my insurance and am having it towed 140 miles ona flatbed tomorrow morning to my dealership where I have extended warranty, luckily insurance is covering all of the tow except for $80.00 I hope my warranty covers this. My truck just turned 79,300 miles today and it's a 2008.5 Pro-4x with the no fear package. If warranty doesn't cover it I'm just trading it in on the spot for a small fuel efficient car, this truck has been nothing but problems since I got it and i'm tired of dumping money into it.

That wasn't it though, plus the ABS and VDC lights didn't come on at all like they should have, i could literally slam on the brakes and there was no pressure for it to get the pads to clamp down on the rotors. So, it was having a temporary hydraulic pressure issue ontop of the other problem. Plus that doesn't explain why I couldn't steer the sum*****.

my extended warranty is good through labor day 2016 or to 120k miles, and since it hasn't even turned 80k yet they better warranty this, and also get the rear diff lock working, or i'm done with this truck.

Steering in 4lo gets tight.
I wonder if the calipers were iced up or something?
Was the whole front end of the truck iced up?

I've had to fix so many things out of pocket that the previous owner never took care of on this truck, and have had the extended warranty not cover several things. I owe $26k on it still. I've put a few grand into fixing various things and i'm tired of it being a money pit. At this point I'd rather take the $7k-$8k trade in loss to get into something like a ford fusion that gets 35mpg that doesn't have all these reliability issues. With the problems this truck has had since I bought it I rarely take it offroad anyhow, since I bought it for offroad and can't offroad it, it's a waste to keep it if it doesn't get fixed properly. Better off in a car since I've had to baby this thing like a car.

no it wasn't iced up and I had just drove 140 miles in it with no problem whatsoever and steering and brakes worked fine. It went to crap when I decided to mess with the 4lo and diff lock.

all the road surfaces I was on when this happened were icy too. But driving out the highways were clear so no ice build up. Probably should have just turned around and gone home on my way out there when a tractor trailer kicked up a big 1 inch rock that left a big star in my windshield, shoulda known it was gonna be a bad day as soon as that happened. I ignored the omen though and now i'm up sht crick without a paddle. Had to borrow my mothers car to drive home.

I'm out of warranty so i won't even touch my diff lock, I know if I try and turn it on it will blow up or something.
I do know if the T case fluid gets old it will take awhile to shift into 4wd.

I have a Ford Focus for a daily. You can get good deals on them and lots of tech.
It gets 24/34 mpg.
The double clutch auto gearbox could be better. The electrics fvck that up.
The engine has zero compression braking.
Seats are adequate.
Handling is above par. Mine is a titanium model with the handling package.
Mine is a hatchback. I think. Ford did a good job with the product but I'd rather have the Mazda competitor just for the gearbox.

Got my truck delivered to the dealer today. Tow truck driver found my right cv axle was broken when he picked the truck up. This would explain the loud pop I heard. It was probably from the cv axle breaking. I took my replacement cv axle to the dealership so they can replace it (no sense in having them source a part when I already had one on hand). I talked to Nissan as well and they said it sounds like an electronic issue with the 4wd not disengaging. Waiting for the ford dealer where I bought it and have it warrantied at to do full diagnostics on it and figure it out, the nissan dealership is just down the road from them. Waiting to see what kind of repair bill I'll be looking at. No fluids were leaking from either of the differentials or the transfer case. Hopefully things aren't as bad as I thought they were. We'll see. I'm in a bit of a better mood today. Also talked with my salesman who did all my paperwork on the titan when I got it about finding something different once the Titan is fixed. I may end up keeping the Titan, if I do I'm never touching that fcking diff lock switch again.

I forgot to update after I got this all taken care of. I kept the truck, the 4 wheel drive had disengaged on it's own when the emchanic looked at it, and it was just the broken cv axle that caused the problems, I got the cv axle replaced with my spare I was holding onto. I need to buy another cv axle for my driver side now, it sounds like it's about to break. One thing I've learned about my truck since I bought it is that I need to buy an extra cv axle every 5-6 months for it.
