Does anyone have any knowledge about electrical problems that may be keeping the 4x4 from engaging?

Do you have any codes to offer or lights on dash? You didn't really give us much to work with. If you have slip light on it won't work.

If you have ABS light, it won't engage. If you have an abs slip vdc light its probably a worn out wheel bearing messing up the sensor and a connection issue. Most common being a leaking muffler burning off the RH wheel sesnsor harness. Transfer cases generally dont have a problem unless its a leaking rear seal
