Before I start tearing things apart, does anyone know if the front driver side axle has and movement in it. My axle moves about an 1/8 of an inch. The oil gasket is good and the u joint is tight. Much like the 2 other recent posts my truck is howling down the road at 40 + mph. I checked the wheels for bearings a there is no additional movement in the wheels, although that still could be the noise. I would rather have bad wheel bearings than a bad differential. Does anyone know if there is an expectable amount of movement in the front axle?

As far as I know, that's normal. My 09 is the same way, and I've never had front drive issues except a slighty weeping seal at the yoke. leak is so small that in a year, i've never had to add any fluid to keep the diff full. keep in mind that shaft is only torque-bearing, not weight bearing, so it's not crammed down on. I'd bet it's the hub assembly, but make sure your diff isn't dry. The one on my wife's suburban howled for a month as it was dry before it had to be totally replaced.
