I had my radiator cap replaced twice when I got my truck, and it stopped with the smell and obvious drips of green, but I could occasionally smell something...
Although I'd look at the skid plate each time the oil was changed, I finally found residue on the skid plate, which pointed to the transmission cooler lines on one hose (at both ends).
I guess over time it finally leaked enough where I could locate it.
