My 2017 Titan had the dreaded knocking and cylinder 7 diagnosis in the summer of 2021. I wanted a full engine replacement but Nissan would only do the small block replacement. I was assured this was the fix. Well 11000 kms and 15 months later the knock came back on cold starts and there is scoring again in cylinder 7. Nissan Canada refuses to accept any responsibility and are now saying,”this is normal start up noise”. I call BS due to the scoring and I am looking at next steps. I was wondering if anyone else out there have us the same issues a second time around. Thanks for any input as I consider what my next best course of action is.

Welcome!

That sucks they are weaseling out of it. A number of people had the knock on replacement blocks, if i remember right but Nissan usa replaced them again.

Reading other canadian stories, nissan canada seems to be horrible to deal with though.

Let some people who had it happen more then once give advice though as i don't have that experience

I don't think anyone else on here had their "updated" short block replacement fail again. Some long blocks and possibly short block replacements that were done before the "updated short block" was used had to be replaced again. I have been through every page of the knock thread.

I could be wrong...

mileage? Nissan dealership tell you Nissan Canada said no? Who did the scope"? who paid? have you seen the pics? do the scuffs comply with the details and photos in the TSB?

This is one thing that scares me. I bought my 17 in 07/17 and it had like 3 miles or something like that. You'll see based off my mileage, I don't drive it all that much because I have a little beater car for to and from work. However, on 11/2020 at 21,401 miles later, they gave me it back after having it for 8 days.

Fast forward to now, I think I'm at like 27k miles. The last time it even had an oil change was March of last year. I don't think I've driven it in months and I put maybe 500 miles on it the past year.

What bothers me is my warranty was up last year and in the back of my mind, I feel like I should of have driven a lot more to make sure it doesn't score again. I THINK I extended the warranty 2 years on top of the 5 it came with, but I guess it ever gets that's bad, it'll be my new beater or it'll be time for a new truck anyway.

Hello all,

First post here, been reading for over a year since I bought my Titan.

Purchased a 2018 SV Titan in October of 2021 with 13,000 miles. Got a good deal (so I thought) since it has a branded/rebuilt title. Bought it from Autosavy, a dealer chain that specializes in purchasing totaled vehicles and repairing and reselling them if it makes financial sense. Did not purchase their extended service plan, sold from a 3rd party, as line two of the exclusions states it did not cover vehicles with rebuilt/branded titles.

At about 20,000 miles, spring of 2022, I started noticing the knock. Started very faintly on cold start up and would go way when warm. This progressed to knocking all the time and got much louder. Knowing the factory warranty is no longer intact with a rebuilt title. I decided to gamble and go ahead and have it officially diagnosed at a dealership, not Autosavy, with the chance that Nissan might partially pay for a shortblock since it's a known manufacturing defect. Dealer verified that cylinder 7 was scored up, submitted to Nissan, and they told me to take a hike. No valid warranty, they won't pay anything.

Called Nissan customer care and they basically told me the same thing. Wouldn't even give me a discount on a longblock. New longblocks come with a 1 year / 12,0000 mile warranty. I'm pretty sure when I inquired about this with customer care in the same call she stated that it's only valid if installed by a dealer or ASE certified shop. If not, no warranty.

I decided to take the chance and purchase a longblock directly from Nissan in July of 2022. Build date for the engine according to the crate it came in is May 2022. My brother in-law and I installed it in his garage in August. That was brutal, I have pictures to share in case anyone cares. New engine runs like a dream, quiet, all that.

Fast forward to about a month ago and I can start to hear very faint knocking at cold start up again when under load at low rpms. Classic symptoms of piston slap. It goes way when warm, though once I swore I could still hear it a bit after being fully warmed, but I may just be paranoid at this point. Engine has about 8,000 miles on it at this point.

So I think I'm SOL with any kind of warranty on the longblock if it comes to that. I have purchased an endoscope to scope cylinder 7 myself to see if scoring is present again. Just waiting for it to stop snowing. There is a possibility that these engines might be a bit prone to cold piston slap and long as it doesn't progress to the severity the previous engine exhibited and continues to go away when warmed up I will live with that. If it progresses and I have another full blown knocker on my hands I guess I'll try getting a warranty replacement. No confidence in that through.

I will update after scoping. And thanks to anyone that has read all the way to the bottom :)

Welcome to the site.

Man, that sucks about everything and buying a long lock and it's knocking again. You should post this in the engine knock thread

I took it to the dealership and they have been great to deal with. Then Nissan Canada sent techs from Ontario to Alberta, not once but twice to look at it. The #7 has scoring again but so far Nissan Canada will not show me the results and are claiming the noise “is normal wear”. I called BS with the Nissan Canada rep as with the noise and the scoring they are simply trying to dodge their responsibilities of not fixing it in the first place when it was still under warranty. I have asked to see the results and they have so far dodged me, calling every week to say they are still looking.
