At what mileage should we start with synthetic?

I’ve done first oil change at 1500 miles on my new 2005 Titan.
Now I am about to cross 4000 miles and I want to change it with Mobile One (to go full synthetic).
Nissan dealer said that I should wait with synthetic oil until 7500 miles.
I wonder what you guys think, at what mileage we should start with synthetic oils on our Titans.
Your help is greatly appreciated

I'm going to wait until 12k....when my free oil changes expire at my dealership. Even if the oil changes weren't free, I'd still wait til 12K.

I changed my factory oil @ 3500 and the 2nd change @ 7500 (I drive all highway and it isn't always convenient to change the oil as soon as it hits the 3500 mile interval)
I put in dino Penzoil for the 1st change then GC Synthetic the seconde change.

Changing your oil is very conditional to your climate. Yes, mobile 1 will last much longer than regular, but if you are in a climate with a lot of dust and other elements in your air, it is better to change it sooner than the recommended time. I look at it like $30 every 3000 miles, better safe than sorry.

This is a good thread. Cars/Trucks are so different today than they were a decade ago.

I used to always change a new car's oil at 500 miles, then at the first regularly scheduled interval. Now-a-days I am told that the new engines don't give off as much metal in the break-in period. I was also told by another Titan owner that I shouldn't bother changing my oil to synthetic until anywhere between 12-15K. :/

These trucks are so new, it's hard to say by experience. Does anyone out there have a lot of miles on your truck yet, and how did you handle service?

Hmmmm... since my truck only has about 600 on it, I haven't tried yet... is it a pain to get the oil filter off, without getting oil all over my truck?
The first change will be a mother because the filter was put on by King Kong at the factory. Other than that, it's sweet with a nice little oil ramp from the filter and everything.

Welcome to the site, BTW.

Thank you! And good. Now I just have to run to the store and buy all new oil-changing equipment. Left it all in NH. :) Also must find out where I can get rid of the stuff around here. :( I used to just go to the dump in NH. In this town I am probably not supposed to even change my own oil (HOA rules).

Most auto supply stores take your used oil. Ask them. Also make sure you get a wrench that will fit the small Titan oil filter before you even start. Have a screw driver handy, you may need it to drive through the oil filter to get that sucker off. I'm not kidding.

I had to do that with our new 4Runner.

OK, I will wait with the synthetic another few thousand miles. May be I will change at 7500 miles. The only thing is worrying me is that I loosing mpg. I am using more gas after I have done my first oil change at 1500 miles. Is this possible??
I ‘m thinking; dealer who did my oil change put some weird oil in (Texaco or something like that) and I am destroying engine.

You don't need to wait, if you have doubts about what's in there, just change it out and put in what you want. Mobil 1 0W-40 has come back with excellent UOA's.
That's what I use, but its hard to find on the shelf around here.

Just curious . . . why do you think we need synthetic? Dino seems to be working just fine for my truck. My truck is used like a truck. About 25% of the time I'm hauling heavy loads and/or towing including a 3-horse trailer on the weekends. No real problems so far.

That said, and reading about this differential scare, my next change will be with amsoil motor and gear lubes.

kendall 5w30 for me, if you plan on keeping your titan for 300,000 miles or more then synthetic may help you in the long run, but how many are going to actually hit 300,000 before we get the urge for a new titan. if you plan on trading the titan for a new titan in 300,000 miles or less then synthetic seems to be a waste.

I cut out the square indention on the metal pan under the oil filter with a torch and lined the edges with some rubber fuel line to protect my tender, soft paws....it sure makes oil changes easier.

I wish Nissan didn't mount the oil filter to the engine at an angle though. This makes a nice clean oil change nearly impossible. Oil drips on that little metal ramp thingy and then gets on the steering rack and crossmember. Ugh!

I did my first oil change at 1700 and will go to full synthetic at 3700. I'm currently at 3500 right now. As for keeping our Titans for 300K miles, well I plan too. I hate new car payments and the quicker I pay this bad boy off, the better it is. That way, I can use the payment money for fun stuff like the Mossy twin-turbo kit when it comes out.:D

Well, I was reading how alot of people on here were switching to synthetic, and all though I agree about changing the rear diff to syn...I am still questioning the reg oil change to syn. I spoke to the service tech working changing my oil (at 2500 miles) and I asked about making the move to syn. He said that it was not necessary, and not recommended on the Titan. So now I am back to square one and deciding whether or not it is worth the extra money.

I look at it this way 37.00 for a change at dealer for reg oil ??? about 40.00 for change with syn myself and I know what is in there and it was done right. Cheap insurance if you ask me.
the dealer charges 37.00 so go by 7 quarts of reg @2.00 a quart and a 6$ filter and save yourself 20$. Synthetic hasnt been around very long and before that cars were lasting over 200,000 miles, now with the engine technology and the advances in dino oil they have today it would be rather easy to put you well over 200,000 miles.

By the way the 5.6 is a 300,000 mile rated engine.

I still say the synthetic oil is a waste of money. I have yet to see any proof that synthetic oil helps an average daily driver at average rpm's of 2000-4000 and temps of little over 200. I can understand the use of synthetic oil in race engines because they spend their life at 9 grand and in very stressful conditions.

The only advantage seems to be longer changing intervals, such as the mobil 7500 or the 15000, but it seems everyone in here changes synthetic at dino oil intervals, just doesnt make any sense.

When you say rated, are you saying that nissan has rated this motor a 300k motor?
Just curious. If the 5.6 is very well cared for it should hit 400k!!
Ive seen a few nissan KA motors at or above the 400k mark and 1 z24 from a 86.5 hardbody at 400k and still going although it had a ton of timing chain noise.
