so I was having some transmission slip issues and after checking my transmission dipstick I found no oil on the dipstick, surely that must be the problem. so today I picked up 5 quart and came home to do the spill and fill. i got about 2 3/4 quarts out of the pan when i drained it. as i refilled it is stopped after adding about 3 3/4 quarts to check the level(with it running obviously), and there was still nothing on the dipstick. i then said screw it and added the additional 1 1/4 quarts that i had. i rechecked the level on the dipstick and realized that i had quite a bit too much and it was at least a half inch over the range on the dipstick. my question to you guys, is it okay that i added maybe 1 quart too much ATF fluid?

Its funny you post this, because I had a very similar struggle this weekend. Yes, having your trans low on fluid is a no-no, so good on you for topping it off before catastrophic failure. I replaced my OE trans pan with a PML pan and of course did the same fill procedure with 3.5 additional quarts. I filled to what I thought would be enough doing my rough calculations of what came out, and nothing registered on dipstick when running. I added another quart and the level was too high for a cold trans. drained what i felt was about half a quart, then too low...frustrating. Finally got it dialed in. I wouldn't keep more fluid than necessary in the trans to be honest. You wouldn't do it to the engine, the trans should be no different IMO. I dont' think a quart high would hurt anything, but it would bother me and be on my mind all the time. Just saying most maintenance manuals say to not overfill...probably a reason for that

A little over won't harm a thing, but you may want to drain some in your case.
You have to picture what's taking place in the pan. Once the fluid reaches the pickup strainer and valve body the level will rise quickly due to the space that gets taken up by those items.
Yes it is frustrating, but it doesn't have to be perfect. In range or just a hair over won't hurt a thing.

I wouldn't worry about being a bit high on the dip stick with a transmission. An engine, yeah I would do something about that.

I had the same problem when I did my DIY flush. I replaced what looked like had come out and I was a quart low and the transmission did not like that one bit.

Update to last: so I was able to fashion together some tubing and a 60cc syringe to try and suck out some fluid. It was a little difficult to get the tubing down in the bottom section but it was possible. I drew about a third of a quart of ATF and re-checked it to find it just barely above to full level which I am happy with.

There are also cold and hot levels, so make sure you're looking at the right ones. I think I drained/filled 4 quarts when I did my spill and fill.

DO NOT overfill or underfill - fluid level should be checked with engine running, on level ground and at operating temp. (driven for about 15 minutes to heat up fluid)
On level ground with a stock Titan or a "leveled" Titan?

My point is that a little over is fine.
