As ^ was changing my taillight bulbs though may as well look and see. And one the 2017s there is an axle vent mod kit basically already installed which is great news. I didn't follow the tube to where it goes but glad it was thought to be put on. Hopefully no rear axle failures or leaks for anyone now!

It wasn't really Dana's fault, the Dana 44 has proved to be a great rearend in a lot of applications. It was Nissan's specs that Dana went by to make our M226. The carrier was junk, and the vent was poorly designed, thus leading to all of our problems.

Never heard anything bad about AAM though....

The new generation uses American Axle.

I suspect they wanted to get far away from Dana after 12 years of bad axles.
i knew they went that way on the XD's, i hadn't looked into the half tons though. good to know

The vent is a problem area, but I don't think it's the sole cause of all of the problems Nissan has had with the Dana design. Nissan discovered many years ago that the axles tend to overheat, causing the spider gears to cook and break down. This greatly shortens the life of the axle. Plus, Nissan has handled the matter very, very poorly. I don't think they have ever admitted there is a major design problem with the axle. Now they are just washing their hands of the entire mess. At least they have warrantied the terrible manifold design for 80k miles, although I think the feds forced them to do that because it's an emissions issue and Nissan was unable to dodge the obligation.

If the vent comes standard, doesn't that make it an update or redesign? Hardly a 'mod' if it's bought new that way

I said it that way so people would know what it was. If I said " it comes with an axle vent" yeah well so did the gen 1 but it was rubbish..

No sir. Nissan uses AAM on both 1/2 and XD.
