Backup camera any time?

Not sure this is the right section and my search for this has not turned up anything. With a factory backup camera, is there a mod that will let me hit a button to see the camera on the display without having to shift into reverse?
I have dark tint on the rear window compounded with dark tint on a camper shell so my rear view mirror is useless. Sometimes I'd like to know what is close behind me out of view of my side mirrors.

Not too sure but I don't think you'll be able to do that with the factory setup, you might have to go aftermarket as I can turn it on when I want and when I put it in reverse.

ya, aftermarket i can drive around with it on. Stalk people behind me. But stock dont think you can
What brand/model of aftermarket camera you guys using, and do you recommend yours or not?

I've been thinking of adding one to my 2004 but just haven't heard anyone say anything on them.

Thanks.
I purchased one off of Amazon that had good reviews that mounts on the bib tailgate part. Where the handle is so it looks oem. Hooked it up to my pioneer indash I like it pretty clear image those distance lines to show you how close you are. I'll post a link to the camera I used. Good price too!

My Backup camera requires more work.

It has LEDs for night time. You need a separate switch to handle the ON/OFF LED.
I was going to purchase one with leds for night time but this camera actually has a really good image even at night I was surprised. So I kept it. The leds don't turn on when the camera turns on?
I got the Pioneer ND-BC5. Works good. Adjustable on a little hinge. Have it mounted smart spot as berto.

I like that look. Did you have to drill there? I'm interested in adding a cam to my aftermaket double din, it has a back up camera wire but how does it know when my truck is in reverse?

HERE is the link to the install. This is the route i went and probably the same as him.

I ran a wire from my reverse light to the reverse wire on the radio. I have a pioneer 4100nex. Run it to the power side. Mine was red with a blue tracer.
OP,
I am also looking into this. if I find any info i'll be sure to pass it on.
The OEM radio receives 12 vdc as an input when the transmission is switched to reverse. If one should apply 12vdc to that input via an external switch then the BU camera should turn on. The input line is in a multi-pin connector that plugs into the radio, would need to tap into the appropriate wire into that connector for access.

Yeah I did but it's very simple. You remove the back piece on the tailgate then take the bib off so you can line it up and then drill a small hole. Cause my camera has a threaded bolt attached to it and then you use the supplied nut to tighten it through the backside. I then route the wires through the tailgate to a hole that's covered by a textured sticker and run the wires from the camera to the dash. As for the trigger wire I tapped into the reverse light as I could not find the right wire to tap into underneath the dash.
