Fixed a common problem with our vehicles - the Oil Cooler Seal on my 2007 (Part that the oil filter screws onto) was leaking oil. Went to RockAuto for the new gasket and one of the parts that comes up is FEL-PRO 72493 {#21304JA11A}. Purchased the gasket and set it aside until the next oil change. During the oil change, I Removed the Oil Cooler and went to replace the gasket and found that the diameter of the Fel-Pro was slightly larger than the OEM and would not fit. I took both gaskets up to Advanced Auto and the guy behind the counter brought out the same Fel-Pro gasket which was the exact same (wrong) size as the one from RockAuto. He also had a Dorman brand for a few bucks more. That one fit perfectly.

Anyway its a $5 gasket so not a big deal but just passing along the experience to possibly save a few others the headache of having it all apart, only to have the gasket not fit! Pic attached - OEM is stacked on top. Subtle difference but enough that it won't fit!

You can take the rubber seal off an oil filter and replace it with that just as easy too.

Some guy who worked for Fram in product development on this forum stated not to run that because it wasn't designed for it and I guess could fail easily because the rubber is different. I mean, guys are running it and gettin away with it I suppose. just sharing what I read.

Could you please post a link to the thread where the Fram engineer stated this?

The oil cooler gasket has a tight tolerance for diameter. I didn't hold it up to an oil filter to check, but if it is not exact, it won't seat in the groove. Also it is a fairly thick gasket. I would say the old one I replaced was compressed to about 1/8 of an inch. The new one was probably 50% thicker. Not sure how thick a oil filter gasket is. Not sure about the rubber compound, but for less than 10 bucks, I would just buy the gasket that is designed for it.
