I will be going to pick up a project car for a friend pretty soon and am wondering if I will need a brake controller. The car weighs around 2200lb and it will be on a "standard" Uhaul car trailer or something like it. I will be hauling it from Pittsburgh to Buffalo. Do I need a controller for this kind of weight?

Uhaul trailers are a surge brake system so if that's what your getting you won't be able to use it anyways.

^^^^What AZPRO said

Brake controlers only tell the trailer what to do. Not all trailers can be told.

Uhaul car trailers are notoriously nose heavy though. You'll be fine but they might sag more than you like. If possible, back that sucker on.

Be sure to check the surge brake fluid reservoir. They as notorious for being low/dry on U-Haul trailers. My in-laws had a fully loaded 6x12 U-Haul behind their fully loaded Chevy Astro in their cross-country move. When they killed the brakes on their Astro, they discovered the U-Haul trailer didn't have any fluid in the reservoir. Fortunately, they just killed their brakes and not themselves.

Might be too late, but as blevinger stated, those suckers are extremely nose heavy...If you can manage to either back the car on, or if it must be pulled on, borrow some chains and binders and back that car up till your a little closer to level. You still want tongue weight, but you don't want 3/4 of the cars weight on the tongue. I made that mistake on a trip from WA to RI, pretty rough ride when it go breezy. The fix is in the works though, Firestone helper bags going on later this week. Good luck and be safe!
