Brake suggestions....from where and what to buy?

1616 Views 9 Replies 10 Participants Last post by  LT_TITAN78
I have a stock 2011 SL with 78k and she is due for new brakes and probably rotors. I was thinking of upgrading to either larger and/or slotted.

I do not tow anything so I'm sure it's overkill buying larger and slotted but I just want it to stop better and let's face it, slotted looks cool, lol.

Any suggestions on what and where to buy?

I am not looking for the best or the most expensive, just a modest upgrade to what is stock and whatever is going to be an easy retrofit to the stock without modifications. I'm looking to do it on a Saturday afternoon, not the whole weekend. LOL.

I know there are TT vendors here that sell so I would obviously like to support them first before looking elsewhere.

Thoughts/Opinions appreciated! Thanks!

send R1concepts (keith) a PM and ask for his recommendation based on your needs.

I have their premium slotted with posi quiet pads for all 4 corners to be installed yet.
I have run the same rotors and hawk pads on another rig!

I got this kit and seems to be doing pretty good so far. I had a little warpage in my OEM set and this set was cheaper than a brake job in town and was pretty easy to install.

I run the Frozen Rotors & Hawk Pads on the T... Great rotors with super stopping power. Give them a shout...

I was same position as you are in.. Needed brakes but didn't want to go overboard but wanted better than stock.

I went with the powerstop full kit off of Amazon. They've been great 10k miles so far. Just make sure you order the correct year. Nissan changed our brake design in 2008. Follow the break in procedure and you'll be good to go.

Maybe you'll get lucky like I did and they'll send you 2 kits and only charge you for one. Sold the second set on Craigslist. My brake swap only cost me 25$.
Upgrading the rotors on my 04 armada to the larger rotors found on 07+ armadas & titans was an obvious improvement. But the biggest surprise were the Wearever Platinum pads I opted for since they were available locally. As a long time user of EBC and Hawk pads since the 90s, I've always stuck with them for every vehicle I've owned. A couple years ago, the time came to replace the parking brake shoes on the armada and found I also needed a set of rear pads. EBC and Hawk weren't an option since no one in NYC had it for my truck and decided to give the Wearever platinum pads a try. It was half the cost and if I didn't like it, I could always order another set of EBCs or Hawks.

When I upgraded the front rotors to the larger OE counterparts last year, I went with the same Wearever platinum pads. Not only do they dust less than the EBCs and Hawks, they stop just as well at a huge fraction of the cost.
I have R1 concepts slotted rotors and their ceramic pads (cheapest). I got those pads because I was also buying a new wheel and just needed something.

R1 customer support is great, but go with some better pads. Mine feel a bit mushy, but I still stop well.

I have the R1 drilled and slotted rotors and they have warped on me every year since i bought them in May of 2013. I had to have them resurfaced in 2014, 2015, and now they are warped again. They are worse than the original recalled Titan rotors. I've spent more money getting them trued than I spent on them.
I called them and their customer service was worthless. They said they would give me a discount on a new set of rotors but didn't seem concerned that they warped every year.
Be warned.

So on that note I need some suggestions on rotors that people have ran that won't warp on me. I'm in Idaho and it gets HOT in the summer. So if any of you guys in Texas, Arizona, etc who drive "spirited" could weigh on what rotors can handle the heat, I would really appreciate it.
I just put brake motive drilled and slotted with Wagner oex pads. Stock rotors had almost 69000 miles on them and we're just about done. Only been on for a couple weeks. We will see how they hold up.

I'm from Louisiana and it gets HOT here during the summer...its rarely below 85. I have had great experiences with my R1 rotors. I've had them on my truck since 2014 and they have been great. No warping, cracking, mushey feel, etc. I have the Premier series slotted with their posi-quiet brakes. Not bad brake dust, quiet, and powerful. I think you might have just got a bad set...maybe made with some flawed steel? I also tow with mine quite a bit, and they have enough power to cause the ABS to come on in the middle of the summer stopping 35" toyo m/ts PLUS a 10,500 pound boat. Dont ask how I know that but lets just say it was SKETCHY ASF! But I stopped in time:bouncy:
