Budget Double-Din Options

I have a single din Alpine in my truck at the moment and while it works well, I can't stand the look of the single din and that ugly Metra casing that it sits in.

It seems like there aren't many double din options, other than higher priced LCD units. I want to keep it under a few hundred.

I know a lot of people endorse the Kenwood DPX701, but in my personal opinion, its ugly and looks cheap (and is getting harder to come by).

JVC has a new unit for '07 that seems pretty solid - the JVC KW-XG700.

Any other suggestions or is that about it in this range?

I have a JVC KW-AX800(paid $530ish through amazon). It works well for the most part. My only complaints is that it is slow, but I have gotten used to it. Also, the interface is kind of *** backwards, but again you get used to that. If I had to do it all over again I think I would have coughed up the money for a kenwood 7100 or something.
Yeah that Eclipse is interesting, but I know where I'm going most of the time (keyword "most"), and iPod connectivity is the most important feature I'm looking for. It looks like that deck is reallllllyyyy basic as far as audio functions go.

I agree on the 7100 - that is the ideal deck I want, but I'm in the middle of remodeling my house and in the midst of a terrible housing market crash, so I can't justify that expense. Thats why i was thinking of that JVC.

I'd love to hear of other's experience with the JVC brand - I have owned a couple of their decks, but that was a LONG time ago (and they both were not good experiences).
I have the same JVC unit, the AVX800.

That is a good point that netboy made, it does seem to be slow to respond to commands, and the menus are kinda basackwards. It does seem to have a good number of inputs/outputs, one of the cooler features I think is the USB cable that you can easily connect USB memory key drives to, or even one of the USB HD's that don't require external power. It also has a SD card slot that you could use as well.

The unit thats required for XM sucks ***. Its a terk universal box with a JVC smart digital adapter, that basically they have put out of production now due to problems. Mine either didn't work at all, or when it did work you couldn't change channels, etc.

I'm waiting on the audiovox mini xmtuner now, that seems to be the only other solution out there if you want to command xm through your headunit, without having to go to a plug n play like a skyfi or something.

All in all, I would probably get one again. I too got mine for about $550ish...
